Title: WTB: Rally project car
Post by flat_out on 11/20/3 at 15:01:25

Ok, I am on the lookout for a rally project car.

As you can see from my "wanted-to-buy" list, I have considered several manufacturers, models and trims. The car should be solid underneath/frame, have a running engine/drivetrain and manual transmission.

My "wanted-to-buy" list:

1984-85 Toyota Celica GT(S) preferrably coupe
1985-87 Toyota Corolla GTS preferrably coupe

1988-89 Toyota Celica All-Trac Turbo
1988-89 Mazda 323 GTX

thanx...

Why not consider ACP's Lada that's listed on this board?

I did consider the Lada Samara package and, while it's a great deal for a prepped car including all the spare parts I was really looking for a "project" car with larger displacement.

Just buy a Merkur XR4Ti for $500 and build it into a Sierra

How much are you willing to spend.
I've got an 88 Alltrac.  Great car.  Put lots of work and money into it.  Right now I'm sitting on the fence as to what to do with it.
I was considering either finish the rally build up on the car, or sell it.  I still don't know which one to go with.
But if you looking for a car, I just might know a few people that are willing to sell their Alltracs or GT4's.
Cheers
Jake

Jake,

In my search for a Rally project car, the emphasis is on "project".

I am not looking for a mint All-Trac, more like a search for one that needs some TLC. I have found the price range is pretty wide on All-Tracs in varying conditions and I lean towards the lower end of a $2000 to $7000 (CDN) range.

Matt out west has a Civic that is log-booked.  I've heard, and now matt is saying, that the cage needs either some additions or a rebuild...

But that could be an option.

Look for Matt in the Canada-West forum on Special Stage.

Don't get me wrong, it is still a project car.
Well any All-trac or GT4 is always a project car.  You constantly got to do something to it.
However, mine isn't exactly mint condition.  It might still need a little TLC which I didn't get a chance to get around to.  I'm just not sure if I want to get rid off it just yet, and if I did, I'm not sure what could I ask for.

Good luck with a search.

Two notes - one, I HAD a GT4 and it was ALWAYS a project. They were essentually hand-built and we're a real pain. Big and heavy too - in road going form - but fast and easily made VERY fast.

If someone DOES have/get one - I have a brand new Factory Shop manual for it that I no longer need.

Let me know if anyone wants it.

Jake and RK,

Thanks for the experienced feedback on the All-Trac. I will keep this in mind when evaluating candidate Rally project cars...
