We will be returning to the Bancroft pit for the RallyCross series this year.  We are working on a plan that hopefully will allow us to significantly increase the number of runs per competitor.

Can someone post directions to the pit in Bancroft, for those of us who have never been before.

Thanks.

I second that emotion, ...i really want to give this a try, what do you need equipment wise? How much to enter? where is the Location in Bancroft? Yadda Yadda Yadda ...

Post by str8@tee on 08/03/4 at 22:23:04

If you went to Tall Pines and are familular with the main service area at Dunegan Rec Center,  its right behind it.  The rec center is on hwy 62 south, about 14km from Bancroft.   There is some links and maps through the Tall Pines web site if that helps.

You really don't need equipment as a beginner aside from a helmet.  For the more serious enthusiast, skid plates, rally tires is on top of the list.

Anyone have an idea as to the entry fees and class structure??

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by AlanO on 08/04/4 at 09:53:50

Entry fee will be about $40 but is not yet finalised so it may change.

Classes are fairly simple, basically they are divided into under/over 3L and by two/four wheel drive.  Full rules will be posted online soon.

I have never rallycrossed. Can any of the more experienced racers give me an idea of type of 'prep' I should do if I want to bring a fairly stock, and completely lame car out ?

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by RyanHuber on 08/08/4 at 14:47:51

Well, you might want to find a set of old snow tires to put on it, better grip and you won't risk damaging your street tires. I've also heard talk to putting duct tape over any painted surface that you think may get gravel spray will help protect your paint. Heck, my door seals aren't all that great, so I've pondered taping all my doors except the drivers closed, so no dust can get in (my interior gets really dirty with dust at rallies). Other than that, come on out, drive at your own pace, and have fun. Heck, for the first one anyways I'm going to be competing on blown shocks, no time to get them replaced before then. The handling is interesting, it weight transfers really nicely, and steps sideways beautifully. Remember, it's about fun, I won't be pushing all that hard, this car has to get me to work the next day!

Post by JamesL on 08/11/4 at 10:51:43

nhibbert suggested i check this out, and I'm glad i did.

Do you NEED a helmet or is it just a suggestion?

If you do need one, what kind of helmet is it? Where can it be purchased or rented?

Ryan, and Norm, you guys know if anyone else from the TSC is going up?

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by RyanHuber on 08/11/4 at 17:01:18

James, I got a tonne of people from TSC who expressed interest, Toshi, Lancer Sau, Keebs, Nuwan, Ben Lam, the list goes on. Come on up man, have some fun!

Now, as far as helmets go, your friendly neighbourhood CARS rulebook states for RallyCross you require a minimum of a Snell M or SA 90 certification, though I would recommend nothing older than an M 95. I'm currently attempting to get a new helmet myself, but there seems to be a bit of a shortage.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by Do_It_Sidewayz on 08/11/4 at 19:46:44

Ryan...if push comes to shove. Let me know.  I've got a pile of helmets around that you could borrow.

Is there a need to pre-register for this event?

Just i know that from TSC we have alot of interest,  and i'm sure no one wants to drive all the way to bancroft to turn around and not have any fun.

Now...back to putting the motor and tranny back in the justy

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by JamesL on 08/11/4 at 19:54:02

Thanks Ryan that's the info i needed.

I'm gonna hit a couple of shops out here in the next day or so to price some out, but if it turns out that they cost too much, then i may be one of the people to beg Chris to follow through on his offer and bring some loaners out to the event.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by JamesL on 08/11/4 at 19:55:29

Say...will there be a TSC cruise going up?

I have NO idea where Bancroft is, but there have to be SOME sideroads going on up?

::)

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by RyanHuber on 08/11/4 at 20:08:18

Thanks Chris, I may have to take you up on that, since CSC told me today that most of the helmets in the shipment they expect on friday are already spoken for. I'll let you know monday at the latest.

Online entry is expected to be up shortly, stay tuned.

As for a TSC convoy, sounds like a good idea (just don't pass any electric cars on the way!), though I won't be able to be part of it as I'll be up there on saturday night. I'm greencrewing the next ORRC event in Ottawa on saturday morning, then heading to Bancroft after.

Maps: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/map/

Sideroads near Bancroft?  Nyeah.  Only some of the best dirt roads in Canada (but, behave, they're even nice at a 'ma and pa' pace).

Post by AnthonyT on 08/11/4 at 22:52:16

I am exploring the possibility of leaving my car in Bancroft over the course of the series.

I would need a place to leave the car (free or rented) from   from august 22nd to October 17th.  If you have any ideas let me know.

I was also wondering if anyone would be travelling to the event either from the North Bay area or anywhere along the hwy 11/400 corridor (Huntsville, Barrie...)

Just trying to see if my idea is feasible and practical.
Thanks, Anthony

Holy Crap...that looks like a long drive...in a good way!

Since this is taking place on a Sunday, is there any idea of time this event will be run at? Or is it suggested to take the next day off?

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by AlanO on 08/12/4 at 13:00:38

The runs will start at noon on each Sunday, wrapping up around 4 or five PM.  You can be at work/school on Monday morning unless you destroy your daily driver.

Website will be up tonight.  Online entry should be online soon, but you do not have to register online (although it would be appreciated!)

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by JamesL on 08/12/4 at 13:09:41

Thanks Alan, that's good to hear it's getting started so early. I don't want to be driving through Toronto too late on Sunday or i'll go mad in traffic.

Do you guys typically take 62 north from the 401? or smaller roads all the way up through Peterburough and such?

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by RyanHuber on 08/12/4 at 15:02:50

Most of us I think take the 35/115 to Hwy 7, then across 7 to 28, and up 28 into Bancroft. The pit location is just south of Bancroft off 62, so you can also scoot across 620 if you wish, kinda 50/50 which is faster.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by English on 08/12/4 at 18:21:57

I have to say that Hwy 620 is a great road. Our b&b for last years Tall Pines was on Old Hastings and we took 620 east across from 28. Some nice wide rolling sweeping turns!!

And it puts you on the right side of Bancroft!!   ;)

I have been told by our scrutineer that an M-class helmet is not acceptable for any driver competing in a car equipped with a roll cage.

Both M- or SA-class helmets are fine for cars without roll cages.

Speaking of lids, I did manage to get mine today, so I won't need to borrow one Chris.

Oh, and as for tire bonus/penalty, I think they decided to do away with that for this year.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri

Ryan, how much did the helmet set you back? I haven't had a chance to look into it as of yet, and i'd like to have a value with which i can compare.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by Do_It_Sidewayz on 08/13/4 at 14:17:51

James.. if you want to just pick up an "M" class helmet. go to cycle world, or parker bros, and you can pick one up for a little over 100 bucks.

Usually Open face "SA"s start at around 300.  and go up quickly.  Personally i paid about 800 for mine, but it's closed face since i kart

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by RyanHuber on 08/13/4 at 14:43:44

James, it's a Bell Mag4, open face SA that I got because I plan to do performance rally as well in the next couple years, so no point in getting two helmets. I got it from CSC Racinghttp://www.cscracing.com for the same price as is on their site, $310.

If you're not going to need an SA rated helmet down the road, I agree with Chris, go get yourself an M rated helmet for a hundred bucks at a motorcycle shop or something.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by JamesL on 08/13/4 at 14:53:51

thank you gentlemen, that's pretty much my budget limit on a helmet. Depending on monetary expenses this week, either i'll pick one up or i may ask you to bring an extra Chris.

Post by Do_It_Sidewayz on 08/13/4 at 16:02:51

Also....James.

If you are in Kitchener. I remember gong to a Crappy tire their, and they sold Bell Motorcycle hemlets which i believe were "M" approved which looked exactly like a Mag4 just they were black.  i don't think they were terribly expensive either.

Just wanted to say that this was an absolute riot! Definitely would like to participate in more of these events and the minirallies as well!

Now i just need to pick up my own helmet and mount an extra wheel on a steelie for emergencies and look at investing more money in the car!

Skid Plate!

Gravel pit was nasty, but in a REALLY good way!

Thanks to Alan, John, Christina (...the only organizers who's name's i caught) and all the other organizers for putting this together. Thanks to the marshalls for their assistance, and thanks to all the people for taking the time to come out and have some fun!

I'll try and post some of the video clips of individual launches that i caught on tape.

Post by Champ_98 on 08/23/4 at 08:41:59

Just wanted to say that this past weekends event was awesome. Thanks to Ross, Mac, Christina, Ryan and gang for a well organised rally cross.

The parking lot was an excellent idea, the pit was pure carnage for anything less than a rally prepped car, (large rock up through the floor pan, one in the fuel tank splitting a seam and one slightly stressed vid cam that appeared to have gone into self destruct mode).

Will have to fit the skid plate for the next event and pray for rain!

I,m going to have to convince more ice racers that there is something else they can do with thier trusty steeds in the summer months.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by RyanHuber on 08/23/4 at 10:34:02

I'm glad you guys had fun, I know I had a blast. Not much voice left today, but that's what I get for starting almost all the cars and shouting times to Ross.

No major damage done (though I haven't gotten the car up on stands to have a serious look underneath yet), only thing was I got gravel in a tire bead and it went flat. I have to get it remounted.

There were a lot of people there with cameras and video cams, there's got to be a lot of good footage floating around out there.

Just got back to London a couple hours ago... Once again, great event! Thanks to all those involved, I had a great time and I think everyone else did too. Unfortunately I won't be able to make the next one due to a conflict with the regional Solo-II in Barrie but I'll definately be back in October!

A few announcements from the RallyX organizing crew:

1. Please preregister if you plan on competing.  We will accept entries at the event but registration lineups move faster if we have more preregistered entries.

2. We have moved the schedule up an hour.  First runs at 11:00am, registration opening around 9:30am, driver's meeting around 10:30am.  We hope this will allow a fifth run.  The website will be updated to reflect this change.

3. We need help!  Please contact me at webmaster@mlrc.ca if you can lend a hand.

Thanks!  We are looking forward to another great event on September 19.

NOW, if you want to DO it for me?

;D

Seriously if someone want to help with the labour I'm all for it...it's that or I'm honestly considering an engine swap 2.2t if possible.

So i definitely won't be coming out to the event this weekend, kind of hoping to get the engine swap done. Everybody have a blast!

In the end i bought a 2.5 SOHC, yesyes i know...do a turbo swap!

unfortunately due to a severe lack of funds...that won't be happening any time soon.

I think I'll be okay with the sohc... 215,000 fewer kms, regular gas instead of premium, should be lower oil consumption...probably saving myself $100 a month in gas and oil.

Engine should be a bit lighter as well... the block seems about 8" shorter and 2" thinner then my dohc; i'm kind of hoping 25-50lbs difference? who knows ...gotta get the old one out first.

and the extra hp and torque won't hurt either (apparently the older 95 and 96 dohc's were 10hp and 5lbs short of the newer models)

Results are now online for the September event.

http://www.mlrc.ca/rallycross/results.html

The club would like to send out a big thank you to all the workers and competitors who made this event a success.  We are very happy with the turnout and the response we are receiving.  We didn't manage to get a fifth run but we'll make every attempt to give you a fifth pass at the October event.

Post by nhibbert on 09/20/4 at 09:15:03

I think in order to get five (or more) runs in we need more workers, either one team for the top and one for the bottom, or one team setting up courses and one marshalling. That way there will be no time lost when we switch courses.

If anyone has any friends who want to help out, get them to volunteer. Or if you're a competitor and can help for part of a run let us know.

Hey, a big thanks to all of the folks who organized the event yesterday.  I just wish we could convince another RWD car or two to come out  ::).  I had a royal hoot at the event.  To get a fifth run in, the courses will have to either be a bit shorter or something.  The lengthened courses (15-20 secs per run compared to the first rallycross) really adds up over 120 runs.  If you guys need some help at the next event, I'd be willing to do something(providing I can actually come to it, of course).  welp, have a good one all.  Anyone got a Dana 30 Truetrac sitting in their garage?  hah.

I'm in the middle of uploading all the pictures my mom took this past weekend, all in high rez, unedited. She got most of the cars, only maybe 2 or 3 she didn't get at least one shot of. Those of you that she missed, I apologize. Some cars that had multiple drivers I was unable to determine which driver was in the specific photo, in that case I put all applicable car numbers in the file name. Enjoy.

I had to pull them down. Used over 900mb of bandwidth in less than 24 hours. I don't want to kill the RSO site by hosting personal pictures. Once I've got them all croped and resized, I'll find a place for them online. If you're looking for something full rez of a specific car, I can email instead. ryan.huber@rallysport.on.ca

few quick questions: Is a passenger allowed in the car? (having signed waivers, with helmets etc)

I seem to have seen a picture or two on the site with a passenger taking photos:)

Also, how stupid would I be to take a reasonably new car out there? I don't think I'll be able to resist either way... :>

Should I be looking to install things like Skid-plates etc? I'm assuming that fine folks at FourMotorSports could help with that...

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by AlanO on 10/03/4 at 16:23:28

Pssengers are allowed as long as they wear an approved helmet and have signed the waiver.

If you don't care about your paint, sure, run a brand new car if you like.  :)  The gravel spray and occasional stone can act as a sandblaster.  Some people have added tape or vinyl protection to save their paint.  Remember, though, if you do not own the car (including leased cars) you must have written permission from the owner as indicated in the rules.  The potential always exists for more serious damage, too.

A skidplate is a wise idea, for peace of mind if nothing else.  You can push harder and not have to worry as much about breaking something important.  They aren't required but I think you'll find most of the front-runners have them.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by Zweistein on 10/03/4 at 17:37:49

... and if I do care about the paint? :O

what kind of 'vinyl protection' are we talking about then? :)

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by Zweistein on 10/09/4 at 00:31:58

I've seen a DOT FMVSS 218 helmet that looks of the appropriate type, but is that sufficient? I don't know how all the DOT, Snell, SA, etc certifications compare...

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by AlanO on 10/09/4 at 11:44:14

If the helmet doesn't have the label mandated in the rallycross rules, it is not acceptable.  The only exception is if the helmet is FIA-certified for rallying (i.e. Peltor helmets) and accepted by CARS for performance rallies.

You can get rallycross-legal M-class helmets for pretty cheap.  Try a kart racing shop.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by Zweistein on 10/10/4 at 10:06:49

Thx:). That much (that I need an approved helmet) I knew though, hence the question - is this label among the approved ones? It's mentioned on the Snell Memorial Foundation (www.smf.org) webpage, but I'm too inexperienced to know if it's two names for the same thing, or something wildly different. It's on the CanTire helmets somebody mentioned were ok for non-rollcage use...

I'm getting a bit desperate because for some reason places like CSC Racing don't work on the weekend (only time I've been in the country lately:(). If CanTire helmets are no good, I don't know alternative weekend location to buy helmets at... :|

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by AlanO on 10/10/4 at 12:15:22

I'm no engineer, but I had a look at the Snell/DOT comparison found on Snell's website at http://www.smf.org/articles/dot.html

The sentence that jumped out at me was this:

Quote:
DOT certification is done on the honor system. The helmet's manufacturer determines whether his helmets satisfy DOT and then claims the qualification for himself. There is not even a reporting requirement. The government does contract for some spot check testing at commercial and private labs but not very much.

So I would have to say that unless the helmet you're looking at bears a Snell label, it's no good.  We have to be fairly strict with helmet rules and can only accept what we know has been tested to Snell's standards.

You can order from CSC online, info is available at http://www.cscracing.com/information.htm

We also have loaner helmets that you can borrow at the event if you cannot buy one in time.  Look for my brother (Erik Ockwell) who will be arriving in a green Ford F150, he'll get you a helmet if necessary.

Title: Re: The 2004 Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Seri
Post by Zweistein on 10/10/4 at 14:40:44

Thanks again - I understand the need for strictness; the confusion of numerous labels out there makes it a necessity I am sure. I'll see if I can find a motorcycle shop next Saturday (ordering a helmet sight-unseen would probably only result in a expensive yet unsafe poor fit :().

Back to the vinyl protection somebody mentioned, and the rules: if I grab some vinyl sheets from Rona, cut them to shape of my doors, and tape them smugly (so they don't flutter etc), would that be acceptable? Or do people use some different kind of protection?

I know I'm pestering you guys with questions - I just figure it's better to be safe then sorry:).

Thanks

Wow, what a day yesterday!:) Even though I took my very own, unbeaten path through the pit, had two mediocre slalom runs, and chickened out for the final pit run, my friends & I absolutelly had a blast!  :D

Big, huge thanks to the organizers of the event; Ryan for letting me ride in his car and seeing how it's supposed to be done; and John for helping prevent a heart-attack when my car developed a groaning squeek  ::)

At the end of the day I noticed that I was almost the only person with a visible license plate... hope there weren't any intruders around  :o

Cheers all, and see you at Lanark Highlands!

PS I was car #11, Silver '04 Impreza Sedan. Any pictures/videos are always appreciated... especially the one plowing straight through the cones on the 2nd slalom run :>

Glad you had fun man, though I don't know if I'm really the one to show you how it's done properly!

I had a blast, finally lost that bit of trim just behind the rear door on the driver's side, but that's ok, I'd lost an inner fender lining the day before crossing 10" of water on Mayo Lake!

We're going to work on our organizational setup, clarify a few rules, etc for next year. Congrats to the real organizers for a job well done.

Once again another fantastic day in Bancroft! Even though it rained, it was nice to see that it didn't put people off.

Thank you to all the organisers for putting on the whole Rallycross series, I can't wait for next years series!!

Also congrats to all the Winners in all three events.

Well, I think that there is some kind of small event in Bancroft in just under 5 weeks, i dought that they will have as many people show up as we did, but good luck to them all the same. ;)

There are a lot of photos of me because my folks had the camera for a lot.

I had a cold, wet, muddy thouroughly good time last Sunday. It was a great series overall, well worth the six hour (each way!) drive each time. Many thanks go to the organisers and volunteers who put in their free time to run the event, and to 4star for helping it happen. Here's to lots of events in '05!
