Title: Tall Pines stories Post by AlanO on 11/22/4 at 08:42:02 Anyone have interesting stories to share? ------- I was co-driving for Dmitri Kishkarev in car #22, a red VW Golf, with a win the P3 class as our goal. We decided to play it safe and run at a steady pace for the first stage of the rally. After looking at the stage notes the night before the rally and receiving a warning at the driver's meeting, it was pretty clear that Lower Hastings was going to be extremely challenging. We expected that we could quickly gain some places as people dropped out early. We were right - several teams went out early. We stepped up the pace a bit for the next two stages and ended up in the top dozen cars at the first service. The middle portion of the rally was pretty uneventful except for our intercom failure right before the start of A6. Fortunately I only had to yell for one stage because we were able to repair my Terraphone at the next service. The fog settled before the start of the night stages, and it felt like we were driving through a bowl of pea soup for both passes of West Eels. We survived the first three Eels Lake stages, but the last stage nearly ended it all for us. The transmission broke about halfway through North Eels II, but we managed to find third gear and didn't shift gears for the rest of the rally. The tranny was howling loudly but it held together for 5km of stage and 35km of transit back to the finish. The end result was an overall win in the regional, and fourth overall (first P3) in the national. We were really pleased with the outcome! Thanks to the organising committee and all the volunteers for a tremendous rally. The whole event ran really well and everyone was friendly and efficient. Title: Re: Tall Pines stories Post by Erooj on 11/22/4 at 17:25:13 I wonder if anyone has any additional info on the man & women that stepped out onto stage A6 while it was still running. They ignored all the shouts from spectators and marshalls and seem quite content on staying on the road. A Marshall had run over to escort them off the road but was met be a little resistance from the women as she began to push and shove the Marshall. Finally three OPP officers ran over and had to escort the two from the stage only after being narrowly missed by a passing competitor. I watched the officers lead the two people back to their vehicle where I saw they had sprayed the message "Death to Taxes" with a large skull and crossbones onto the back of their pickup truck. We all had a good chuckle. Erooj. |

The cops came and gave the one guy a ticket. It was pretty funny. The spot we had was awsome, just like the racing. Can't wait till next year. ;D |

They were in fact walking to their car, but in a less than safe fashion. The two officers and myself ran over there because we didn't want a fight between the marshalls and the locals. The officers spoke to them and calmed everything down, and the situation didn't go any further. |

However, my favourite moment was definitely being the one to flag the cars out from the podium. That was fun! I'd also like to take a moment <ahem> to again congratulate Ryan Huber on his MCO award! ;D Good thinking on Craig Hamm's part, and thanks to Ross for letting Craig give the award during the workers' meeting. Title: Re: Tall Pines stories Post by dtompsett on 11/23/4 at 14:47:49 Definitely had a great time this weekend. It's a shame that so many cars were knocked out of the race.... what attrition! I'd hate to know the $ value of all the damage done. Just glad my car made it through without any noticeable damage (other than loosening up a few of the already worn suspension bushings)... thank goodness for skidplates... now, to just extend that over the brake/fuel lines, and protect the tranny/ rear drivetrain. Hmmm... how does one lift a car 1-2", but make it look stock? Need some more ground clearance before a decent skidplate gets built. Jeannie VE3JNE wrote on 11/23/4 at 11:18:11:
Hah... just think.... a bunch of ryans driving around.... eek! :P Once i'm done school, and have more time/money to devote to the sport, I am definitely going to be following ryan, along with lots of other people, so I can learn the little details, and become more involved. |

Title: Re: Tall Pines stories Post by John_Vanos on 11/23/4 at 20:28:09 I owuld have written my reply earlier but I was shaken by the thought of clones of Ryan runnign around! :P I had a predictably wonderful time at this years pines. It was great to see and talk to so many people I now know. I never realized just how many great people I have met through this great sport! My event started on Thursday morning doing CP board stakes with John Bellefleur. I had a great time doing that because if any of you know John, you know hes a bit of a character!! Thursday night I was at the cottage with everyone and was trying to figure out the plan for all !!3!! car 000's. Friday morning I was once again back in the Jeep liberty with JJB. This time we were doing arrowing in egan. JJB made me feel really sick though as the high jeep combined with bellefleurs left foot braking and the rough egan creek stage to make me feel a little green. The rest of the day consisted of shakedown spectating and getting my car ready for the rally. Saturday started early and ended late. We were 000 for every stage but A7 and A3 due to time restraints. All went smooth after erik and I got in the 'groove' car 000 is NOT a holiday! its bloody busy work and sometimes quite stressful! After the rally was over we headed back for a beer or two at HQ. Congrats go to AlanO and dmitri who came 4th overall with a P3 car!!! the last stage even saw their tranny explode and lock in third gear. Great work guys!!!! Already cant wait for next year! |

Title: Re: Tall Pines stories Post by nhibbert on 11/25/4 at 15:34:15 I showed up at the A7/A9 Heritage Trail jump TC at 11:00am to start getting it ready for the 2 o'clock A7 pass, only to find about 30 local kids in pickup trucks with a bonfire going. They had "snuck in" on the trail. I told them A) that they had a long wait, and B) that Old Detlor Road was still legally open, so they didn't have to drive on the trail yet. They all rushed over to the Iron Bridge. Most of them came back later. Just as Car 0 passed two people showed up with a large camera and a big Subaru sign (and media passes), and started walking on the course. I obviously shouted at them. They had thought that it had been Car 00 and they had lots of time. It was hilarious watching them try to get set up before the first car came roaring by. |

The media guys set up took a few pics and them left about half way through, so I don't know if they got you, and I don't know who they were. Sorry. A lot of cars got air on the jump. It was quite spectacular. |

A couple of people noticed me in the photo in Jim Kenzie's column in the Toronto Star on Saturday, November 27, and "Gully" of PMSC kindly sent me the story. So, there I am, on the podium with Tom McGeer . . . so to speak. ;) ;D Jeannie |
