Title: 1992 Black Bear video
Post by Tom_H on 03/30/6 at 19:58:36

Hi all
I'm going to be posting some video of the 92 Black Bear in the next few days and I'm wondering if anyone has an entry list? I'd like to be able to put some names and car numbers together.
Tom

I don't think you'll find anything online.  I've searched every archive I can find and there are no online records of any OPRC event before 1996.
Although I did find alot of other interesting things, like some rally pictures from the 80's, and this:Wishbone Racing Wire, and various other cool sites from the recent past, which I had never previously heard of.

Sorry, but there isn't sound. I do know a few of the cars but there is quite a few I don't remember. If you recognize a team, please put down their car number and name.

Tom, do you happen to know where that spectator area is? I don't recognize that sequence of corners at all! I've got a route map from 92, they used all the same roads we're using, plus the Anson Creek stage that tees south off Pine Springs.

Anyways, thanks Tom!

The Mercedes @ 1.20 min is Ian Robertson if I remember right.  I don't have a car # or co-driver name though.

So, considering this is way before my time, I'm not really one to try and tell you who each team is, however...

First car, Audi, the Sprongls.
Second car, Celica, not a clue.
Third car, Legacy Turbo, Tom and Trish McGeer.
Fourth car, looks like a VW, maybe a fox, no clue.
Fifth car, Escort, no clue.
Sixth car, Swift, well, there were 12 of them...
7th, Golf.
8th, Corolla GTS.
9th, not sure what that car is, kinda looks like an Escort, or a Saab.
10th, another GTS.
11th, that's a Lada!
12th is a Volvo, Bo? Edit: Mercedes you say? Hmm, who'd a thunk it!
13th is a Mk2 Escort, I think.

Woah, ok, that spectator area I recognize, at the Bridge on Pine Springs, but there aren't any trees there! (can you tell I'm watching this again, and commentating as I go?)  ;)

Nice video Tom!

It's an Audi, you can briefly see the logo on the grille as it rushes by.

That's a Datsun 510

Pretty sure that's Tony Lee - I co-drove for him at the 'Pines before this video was taken (the Pines *after* his Castledines roll...)

I'm thinkin' the Mk1 Escort is a Toyota Corolla

The FWD Escort might be the Latreilles

I was only 10 years old at the time so a lot of it is a blur now but I do remember that silver Mercedes (12th car). I'm pretty sure it was driven/owned by Ian Robertson but I could be wrong.  It's definitely not a Volvo, and even if it was it wouldn't have been Bo's.  I can't remember what year my father bought Bo's car but I have a picture of my father running the 93' Black Bear.  My father bought the car from Karl Schribber (sp?) who had it sitting (not sure how long) because he couldn't license it in the U.S..  I figure the time between Bo retiring the car and my father running the BBR in 93' was over 1 yr.

I think your right about the first and third cars but the Audi (1st car) may have been John Buffum instead, maybe.  Like I said most of it is a blur now.

It's entirely possible, this is way before I really got into rallying. I was 13 at the time, had been to Pines once a couple years before probably, but that's about it. I didn't get serious into this until 2001. So yeah, a little before my time, I'm just guessing blindly for the most part ;)

I found an old issue of Rally Magazine with short blurb about the rally.  Sprongls won by over two minutes.  Janne and Jukka Blom were second.

In the video:
Second car is Wojtek Grabowski
Fourth car, maybe Jon Kemp?
Fifth car is Barry Latreille
I think the sixth car (first Suzuki) is Ari Montonen
Seventh car is Bob Elliott (pretty sure)
Eighth car (red/yellow Corolla) looks like Richard Sharpe
13th car (old white Corolla) - Kevin Inkpen?
Very last car (yellow/blue/red Golf) is probably one of the Peireiras.

Cool video, thanks for sharing!

Hey - would any of them have been Bjorn Anderson, Niall Leslie, Randy Black, Walter Boyce
Perhaps Doug Woods could chime in.

Donna:

The video is from 1992, not 1982!

Whoops!  Really showing my age.  Walter did have a Swift in 1992 but I am not sure he ever raced it.

Ryan
I have no idea of where that series of corners were.  As for the Mercedes, I believe it was Sean ( not sure of last name ) from Kitchener with Ean Robertson co-driving.

Here's link to the other events I've posted including the 79 Criterium, the 79 KWRC Rallysprint and the 1982 Muskoka
Rally.

Tom,
You're not thinking of Sean Hyland are you? He was out of the sport long before 92 wasn't he?

Great videos. Sure brings back memories.

I've been away, but when I got home I dug through the boxes in my basement.

Here are the Final Results of the 1992 Black Bear Rally, held on June 13th in Minden, Ontario (first number position in Stage One; second number Overall Finish positions):

1/1 - Frank & Dan Sprongl - Audi

2/19 - Wojtek Grabowski & Marsha Grabowski - Celica All Trac

3/2 - Tom McGeer & Trish Sparrow (not married yet) - Subaru Legacy (brand new car sponsored by Subaru)

4/3 - Richard Sharpe & Ian MacRae - Corolla GTS

5/17 - Charles Hammer & Patrick Peloquin - Golf

6/DNF - Barry & Sandra Latreille - Ford Escort

7/5 - Kevin O'Dea & Gord Tracz - Audi

8/9 - Bob Elliott (later became Liz Campbell) & Terry Epp - Golf

9/4 - Ari Montonen & Brian Maxwell - Suzuki (this one was not one of the Cdn 10 - came from Europe)

10/DNF - Yoshio Kinoshita & Gary Murakami - Corolla GTS

11/6 - Kevin Inkpen & H. Tyler - Corolla (Note - I later ran with Kevin and we won the Cdn Production Championship - pretty sure it was in Ari's Montonen's Suzuki)

12/DNF - Pete Pollard & T. Smith - VW Scirocco

14/20 - Tony Lee & Eric Curtis - Datsun 510

15/DNF - C. Szobczak & K. DeLoughary - VW Rabbit

16/11 - Carlos Oliveira & A. Tavares - VW Rabbit

17/18 - Lawrence Renaud & Gord Blanusa - Nissan 200 SX

18/8 - J. Kujawinski & I. Niedwiecki - Corolla GTS

19/10 - Ian McEwen & Sheila McEwen - Corolla GTS

20/14 - Luis Oliveira & Rui Coehlo - VW Golf

21/12 - Philip Assad & Mike Pfeifer - VW Golf

22/DNF - Maskus & Trott - Conquest

23/13 - Peter Reilly & B. Muir - VW Golf

24/16 - Barry Spinner & Roger Sanderson - Suzuki (one of the 10)

25/15 - Paul Henshall & P. Mansueti - Suzuki (one of the 10)

26/DNF - Robert Jekosz & A. Wolski - Corolla GTS

Now it will make more sense when you watch the video, knowing who they are.

This sure brings back some memories.  It would be great if people could find other old photos etc.  I have all the Results.

BTW the route was very similar to the 2005 Black Bear with one small stage dropped off.  HQ was at the Minden Arena and Finish was at Hart Lodge on Hwy. 35.

Look at the organizing committee:

Organizer - Philip Orr

Registrar - Susan Dafoe

Chief Control Marshal - Dave Paisley

Chief Radio - Ross Wood

Chief Scrutineer - David Gill

Routemaster - Vic Bodnar

Chief Scorer - TBA (think it may have been Chris Castledine)

Promotion - Robert Roaldi

Senior Steward - Richmond Sullivan

Entry fee was $235.

I also have all the stage record speeds.  Will do a comparison to last year - pretty sure some old records will still stand.

Ross

See, I knew there was a reason we kept Ross around  ;)

Thanks!

Just realized there was an omission in my posting.

There were two Car 12's - the second one was:

12/7 - Sean Ryans/Nick Jankovic - Mercedes
