I've had a long time interest about getting into performance rally in production class. In a few years when I have enough money to do so.

My question is about the engine displacement in the C.A.R.S. rules after finding this link.

I don't understand how you find "adjusted displacement", or does that no longer exist for engines with 4 valves/cyl? In which cases, 2.2 liters would be 2.2 litres?

I happen to have an Ecotec equiped Pontiac Sunfire on hand (the same one that won monday's mini rally, beginner class). I thought that would be great if I could performance rally with it in a few years. I just wanted to make sure I understand how and if it fits into the production class.

Currently, in production class the displacement modifiers only affect turbocharged engines, and rotary engines.
So for you 2.2l, is 2.2l.

But if you're not planning on getting into performance rally for a couple years, there's no need to worry about stuff like that just yet.  That rule has changed more than once over the past few years, and could easily change again.

The other thing that should be said, and has been said over and over: buy your first car. It'll be cheaper than building a car, even if you have the car sitting there to build. That, and frankly I don't know of any rally-specific bits for a Sunfire, whereas something like a Golf has had years of development and things have been well sorted, rally bits exist (suspension, etc) so you're not trying to re-invent the wheel.

I realize it might be tempting to build what's in front of you, but it's almost always better to buy the first one. Build that one while you're rallying the one you bought if you like, then when you wad up the first one you've got the next ready to run with minimal downtime  ;)

Having competed in a Cavalier in the navigational series I can't help but agree with Ryan on the parts issue with the "J" body GM's.  The car has some serious issues if it were to be taken into performance rally.  These include: undersized brakes (ask any controll marshal from the OWR from 1999-2005 about my car), no real rally suspention (all the aftermarket I could find lowered the car and the rear strut mounts fail weekly), Body strength (although the car is heavy for what it is I was never able to find the strong area, read the car bent at every bump in the road).

These are just the three top issues I saw.   That being said a "good" old used stage beater of  a rally car can usually be had for under $10K, you would spend way more than that in just preping your car.  Never mind the spare parts that usualy come with a used Rally car.
