The Rally of the Tall Pines (24-25 November 2006), one of North America's fastest growing rally events, is looking to put together an amazing team of Workers for this year's race!

Every Worker that registers online will be entered in a draw for great prizes! Register before October 14th and you can DOUBLE your chances of winning some cool prizes like a Kayak donated by ClearWater Design!

The Tall Pines treats our volunteers like no other rally! We need hundreds of workers to make this unique event a success. In appreciation of your help, all Workers will receive free Tall Pines merchandise, free dinner and many other exciting perks!

Rally Headquarters will be at the Dungannon Rec Centre on Hwy. 62 south. Virtually all activities including a new and improved Banquet will take place here. The official WORKER'S MEETING will be held here on Friday, Nov. 24th at 9 P.M.

If you did not receive your email, your email address may have changed. You may still log in using your account details from last year in this case, or simply re-register as a new worker.

The Work Day in Bancroft has also been set. If you are available to help with preliminary route work on Saturday October 21st, please indicate this when you sign up or contact Ross Wood ross@tallpinesrally.com. Workers who are also competing in the October Four Star Motorsports Rallycross Series will be entitled to a $10 rebate off your entry fee!

I just have a few questions, I was a spectator last year and have thought about volunteering this year to help out. You say that the best way to spectate is to volunteer, I really liked spectating last year but if I volunteer I would find it hard to watch the rally from HQ or something. Also where do they normally put first year volunteers?

Just something I would like cleared up thats all, it would be a great lesson for me as well as I have aspirations of becoming a participant of this event in the future.

disclaimer - I am not part of the Tall Pines exec.

I have worked at Tall Pines since 2000 and in my experience most inexperienced volunteers end up doing Marshalling at Spectator Points. So you still get a great chance to watch the stages and volunteer. It just depends on which positions you get.

I highly encourage people to volunteer. A rally like Tall Pines requires hundreds of volunteers to make happen. Without those volunteers the rally would not happen.

Nothing will help you more to understand how a rally runs then volunteering and being inquisitive.

My first volunteer position was working a flying finish. Great opportunity to see the cars in action from a vantage point that most other people won't see. If you like the spectator area then you can ask to be stationed at the spectator area. Some people like being stationed at the HQ so they can see the action during the services and chat with the service crews during stages.

"Hard-core" volunteers get their ham radio licenses so they can be stationed as a marshal out on the middle of a stage.

My two cents...

I've volunteered at several events since 2001. Usually one or two a year. Honestly, I am not sure I ever had the opportunity to see alot of the cars. Finally I decided to go to an event purely to spectate - that was Baie des Chaleurs last summer - Frankly - even though I never see as much working as if I had just been there too watch - I've gotten much more satisfaction from working the event then waiting to see it happen.

When you complete your Worker Registration on the website, you have the opportunity to indicate any special requests, which could include where you would like to work e.g. at a spectator area or at a timing control. We always try to accommodate such requests.

What all those guys said, plus, as I've said many times, from seeing others that have moved into performance rallying, those that do very well early on in performance rallying either have:
a) God given talent, and they never volunteered, or don't feel the need to etc etc; and then the normal people....
b) Have volunteered a lot at all kinds of rallies (road rallies, stage rallies) in a variety of positions ranging from spectator control (umm, spectating spectators between cars, and during, of course), TCs (Traffic Controls out in the woods), starts, finishes, all the way up to positions like official Course Cars, Stage Commander, Area Supervisor, Safety Officer, etc., and no doubt, Clerk of the Course, Organiser, and Steward!

You say you may want to do stage rallies. What I'm saying in (b) is this: when you understand how a rally "works" you know a lot as a competitor. Nothing surprises you. You move a lot more seemlessly into the driver/co-driver seat when the environment is understood. THat means more of your concentration can be better focussed to getting your driver to go faster (or slowrer as needed) or being a better driver.

While it's true that to win stage rallies you need to be faster than your competition out on the stages, I've seen many teams lose rallies because they simply didn't understand "how something worked" OFF the stages.

And to reinforce Norms statement: GET YOUR RADIO LICENSE. You can start picking and choosing more positions to your liking, then. As soon as I had my 'radio ticket' I was out on deep woods stages, starts, finishes, and now driving and co-driving course cars! And those 5/8 whip antennas are real babe magnets and make your car go faster (LOL).
