Just so I know what I'm in for. Is this a "rough" track (plowed motocross tracks) or a relatively smooth track (plowed parking lot)?

Title: Re: MLRC WinterRX - Test, Tune and Develop - Feb 1
Post by rosswood on 01/31/7 at 10:12:10

There are two tracks.  The first, which is certain to be used,  is the main road in to the HQ site.  It is very smooth and is just under 2.5 km in length. This course would be best described as medium quick to quick with some great turns in it.

The second is a specially designed RallyCross track, measuring about 1.7 km in length.  It is extremely tight and technical with some neat changes in elevation.  At the moment it is quite driveable,  but somewhat rough.  A good snowfall should fix that.   Then the track owners can groom it smooth.

We tested on the 2.5km in November and it was pretty smooth - with frost/snow it should be even better.

:) Hi Guys,

My name is Connie from Burnt River Off-Road Vehicle Facility. I just wanted to let you know that my husband Rob is out there grooming the course and driveway for this weekend testing and tuning event. We are suppose to get another 5cm of snow tonight. The weather for this weekend is call for sunny weather. It should be a fun and exciting weekend. I look forward to meeting all of you.

Cheers,

Can the experienced rallyheads who've seen the track let us newbies know a bit more on what to expect?

I have little to no real experience on snow - if it's a autocross or rallycross-like place where I can reasonably safely practice and figure things out, awesome! But if the roads are fast and surrounded by trees, and I'm supposed to drift perfectly at 60km/h or something... I may just give my spot to somebody else....

Thanks!!

This place is perfect to learn to drive on Snow!!!

Just like the track in Bancroft but on snow!!

These events are disigned for both kinds of people, ones that have never done it before to learn and for those who want to practice.  And dont panic, if you stuff it, we have 4x4's on-site to pull you out.

As you say yourself: If you understand what you are doing, you aren't learning anything! .

And Nik... you don't have to carry a lot of speed to practice being sideways.  Just because you can reach 60km/h on a straight doesn't mean you have to... don't make the day about trying to beat everyone else, make it a day to learn how to handle the car... start slow and work your way up.

Heck, see if you can have someone more experienced ride along with you... and ride along with them.  If there is time, it might be worth it to have someone experienced drive your car with you in it, explaining how they are driving... then switch places and have them critique how you do.

The ice races in Minden have a novice school on the first few weekends where they do just that... someone drives your car with you as a passenger, then you drive with them... I saw huge improvements in my first day from this sort of school.

Post by Nikola on 02/08/7 at 11:25:13

Good to hear - thx guys! :)

- No, I'm not planning to compete or go particularly fast - but was wondering if the curves are slight enough that you *have* to go fast in order to slide at all.... Sounds like that's not that case though!

Dear James (Crusher of Omnis) Drake

Please park your welded-diff VW in a prominent spot so that I can park
the 22 year old open-diff P.O.S. Omni just ahead of it, which, incidentally,
will be the same order as our standings at the finish.
:P

Earle ;D ;D ;D

Sorry it has taken so long to reply, but I had to get up off the floor from laughing so hard...

And who said anything about a welded Diff? My 115bhp to your, what, 170bhp, and I can still beat you? And I drive mine to work every day :)

See you (in my mirror) on Sunday

JD
(oh...if it wasn't for that bloody stop box!!)

If you want to see the Omni in your mirror, you better have a hitch on your VW and tow it up there for me.

And hey, just 'cause the Omni has a hair dryer on the motor, don't let that scare you.

its not a stop box its not a stop box its not a stop box

I'm just hoping it will start with that 4 year old gas still rolling around in the tank.

Thanks to all the workers, organizer and owners for putting such a great event.
It was a blast searching for grip on slightly icy corners.
The access road was a blast to drive on as well.

So what day do we need to book off for the next event??

Doug, I got a couple of pictures of your car :)
What great fun, thanks for the exciting ride down the "stage' road.

I'm a writer, putting together a story on the event. I chatted with a few of you, but it was too bloody cold to talk to everyone. If anybody has anything to say, a short quote about their experience of the event, that I might be able to use, by all means please send it along!

I'm reminded of an episode of the Simpsons:

"The two sweetest words in the English language! De-fault! De-fault! De-fault!"

Seriously though, that's some hideous times even discounting my spin in run 3 :( Looks like there's some work to be done before August!

Im pretty sure I wasnt even driving for every run except the first one!!  I was swapping cars with Nate (volvo) and James (golf)  I got all 3 drive configurations in a day, it was fun!  NEedless to say, not sure these results mean all that much but thatnks to everyone for putting on a GREAT event, truly had a blast!!!

Title: Re: MLRC WinterRX - Test, Tune and Develop - Feb 1
Post by AlexeiS on 02/18/7 at 18:59:30

This would have been better to ask AT the event, but... For the AWD guys, how were you handling the tight turns? Were you setting up for them with rotation and "coasting" through? Or were you giving generous throttle to claw your way around?

If you watch my vids, I had a lot of trouble at turn 3, the hairpin right, and turn 4, the hairpin left with the huge cones. I just couldn't get anything going there, and I was always pushing to the outside. Even when I tried to keep the rotation going with throttle input, I would either seem to go wide or if I took off the throttle the rotation would stop and understeer set in.

How were you handling it?

Title: Re: MLRC WinterRX - Test, Tune and Develop - Feb 1
Post by dtompsett on 02/18/7 at 19:57:41

enter corner... understeer like crazy... set up for next corner... understeer... oversteer... straighten out... oversteer with big laughs... repeat for rest of course....

I was tossing it around having too much fun... the Audi is an understeer pig!

Title: Re: MLRC WinterRX - Test, Tune and Develop - Feb 1
Post by Leo on 02/18/7 at 20:27:51

Set the car, clutch in and pull the e-brake EARLY ... power slide through the rest.

Title: Re: MLRC WinterRX - Test, Tune and Develop - Feb 1
Post by RyanHuber on 02/18/7 at 21:14:17

Yeah, I was using a lot of e-brake, but if I went in too hot into that hard right before the big cones, it'd always wash wide. Seemed to happen almost every run, except a couple times when I managed to set it up right and hit the apex close, then it worked. Doing that though meant going wide on the entry where there was all kinds of loose stuff from everyone else taking a tighter entry than me. The big cone corner, well, that was almost always laughable throttle oversteer, I could transition into that really early and be totally sideways if not almost backwards before I got to it ;)

Title: Re: MLRC WinterRX - Test, Tune and Develop - Feb 1
Post by RyanHuber on 02/18/7 at 22:23:04

Things were run rather informally, and towards the end of the day some competitors (such as myself) ended up missing a run or two because they were doing a run of the driveway. Others, well, I dunno why they chose not to do all their runs. After I got back from doing the driveway I went straight to the short course but it was already being packed up. Meh, thus is life.
