Here's a very crude approximation of the track layout as it will be plowed. It's about 200m x 150m and very flexible in how we lay out the actual course. Figure on 800m to 1km course layouts, with laptimes between 1:30 and 2 minutes.

Also, current snow conditions in the area can be seen here:

http://www.limericklodge.com/webcam.html

As of December 31st there's 21" of snowpack up there!

Here is a map for the new location, as you can see it is very close to the old site.

SNOW CONDITIONS

Ross is working on the track right now and there is a 3 foot snow depth :) :) :)

Title: Re: RSO Winter Rallycross Series presented by MLRC
Post by RyanHuber on 01/05/8 at 12:08:37

Just heard from Ross, the track is plowed now, 4-6' snowbanks on the outsides of corners and 2' on the insides. They did it rough with the loader first, and now the town guy is coming back with the blade on it to smooth things out, etc. Things are very soft still because the frost never got in the ground before the big snowfall at Pines, but the warm temps, rain and then cold again we're going to get will serve to firm everything up. Once it turns cold again, everyone hope for snow that we can pack down and make the track perfect!

Winter RX Track Report Jan 5 08

Spent most of today in Bancroft working with Chris, our Town of Bancroft friend, creating the new Winter RX course.  We discovered that with the snow arriving so early in November, the ground underneath never got frozen.  So the plan today was to rough out the entire course.  The predicted warm weather and rain will get the ground very wet, then the upcoming cold snap will freeze it solid, now that we have removed the deep layer of snow insulation. After that we just need a bit of fresh snow for perfect conditions.  If there is no fresh snow,  we will still have a great course with huge, friendly snowbanks.  The snow is so deep up there that there is virtually no chance of it melting off in a few days of warm weather.

We designed the course so that it has countless options for course layout.  The one I measured off today when we were done was just under 1 km. in length. I drove it my street 2WD Corolla with absolutely no problem.  The course is on a totally flat field with no obstructions whatsoever, so the only thing you can possibly hit is a snowbank.

So get that car ready and clear those three dates!

Preview picture!

Ross took this shot very early in the plowing process, much of the track that is in the background is not yet plowed (though you can see some of the stakes and tape we used to denote apexes). Hopefully they don't get too much rain up there over the next couple days and some of that packed snow freezes into a nice ice base and then we get some good snow on top!

Good luck with the snow! All we've got here is rain and fog, and more rain. Our beautiful track . . . I don't want to think about it!  :'(

Yeah, it's looking pretty similar up there at the moment too. I'm still holding out hope though that after tomorrow the temps will drop enough to freeze things back up and then we get some snow to rebuild a track surface. Fingers are crossed. Worst case, we've got the first sunday of March booked as a rain date if we have to skip the first event.

Hi Guys

How much snow is left on the course?

Sounds like this should be a lot fun.

Maybe this series I can have time to drive a car.

Hi Dan,

Nobody's had a look at the course yet, but I think Ross will be heading over to check early next week. Judging by the pics from the Limerick Lake webcam though, I'd suspect that there's no snow on the track, but the banks will still be there, albeit smaller now. We're still hoping for a decent snowfall over the next few days to give us a track surface back (which the forcast seems to be giving us Monday and Tuesday) so we're going to have to just wait and see at this point.

I know that we can't trust or predict the weather, however what are the chances that the ground will be covered and/or iced over to have at least a few passes in the snow other then mud?

Also will there be helmets on site that you can rent/borrow?  I can't remember what the arrangement was last year at Burnt River.

Thanks,

Jakub

Most people are pretty good about lending out their helmets, you just have to ask.

Title: Re: RSO FourStar Motorsports Winter Rallycross Ser
Post by RyanHuber on 01/14/8 at 15:47:00

Jakub,

Ross is planning to go have a look at the course tomorrow, and we'll be making a decision on the event tomorrow night. I wouldn't worry too much about mud, but frozen dirt is more likely.

I'm sure there will be helmets there you can borrow, I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Title: Re: RSO FourStar Motorsports Winter Rallycross Ser
Post by RallyJake on 01/15/8 at 08:15:06

Thanks Ryan,

The sooner we know the better so we can arrange our schedule to attend the event.

Let's hope it's a go, although frozen ground doesn't sound like that much fun.

Title: Re: RSO FourStar Motorsports Winter Rallycross Ser
Post by RyanHuber on 01/15/8 at 22:10:37

Alright folks, here's the deal. Below are the current track conditions. As you can see, things are certainly less than they were, but usable. The forcast is calling for more snow up there over the rest of the week, but we're still not really going to have big snowbanks, etc. We're trying to make a decision if the event should go or not, because so far we only have 7 entries. So, we're going to put it out to you guys. After seeing these pics, if we get some more entries lined up then we'll be a go (we need a minimum 12-14 to make it worth while), otherwise we'll postpone this event until February 3rd and hope we still have snow in early March for a third event.

So, get your entries in here: http://www.oldrallysport.on.ca/rallycrossentry.html

Great News,

Now maybe I can sell some snow tires, rims and make space at the shop.

Or even some soft gravel tires if it gets warm enough. HA HA HA

Now only if I had something to drive!

You need deep pockets to repair MKIV Passats, it would appear. 1 CV, 1 Wheel well liner, one piece of rocker trim... That was from two events, and I didn't hit anything!

*sigh* This student business is so overrated!

4 years of bouncing off the redline at rallyx and I never had a skid plate - and I never broke anything (including the year all the runs were in the pit) + I drove home to N.Bay afterwards.  Must be something wrong with the Passat - get VW to pay for it.

The only way is eBay! - Try comparing parts prices on eBay against VWoC's prices. It is rediculous.

If I had to pay the dealer to fix what I have done on my car so far, I would have had to sell the car.

Have you done the timing belt yet? My first one was almost $1000 (on my 99 you have to change belt, tensioner, etc. due to a bad tensioner design from the factory)

I'd like my Golf back!

I buy everything off of ebay/the web.

I just had the Waterpump/timing belt done in the Jetta (which is a 1.8T) at a local independent shop, it was about $850 with taxes.

Watch out dave, the water pumps on our vintage of VW blow between 60-120k. Its freakin' annoying.

Yup, already did the water pump!

On my timing belt I was lucky. The tensioner packed it in just north of Toronto. I drove it all the way back to North Bay and it stayed on. The tech took it off without any tools, they couldn't believe it stayed on!

Dave, I'm going to have nightmares about your timing belt!

I have a torn CV, I figure its damaged enough from recce at pines (and alot of driving since), and the winter weather that I might as well go for broke since I likely will have to replace the whole thing. Now, all I really want is oooodles of snow.

Getting back on topic of the rallycross.

I'm assuming that there will be a possibility to come out and register on site, just like with previous events.

Still working out the logistics to make the event, oh and praying for a surprise from mother nature and at least 10cm of the white stuff overnight.

Yes indeed you can register on site tomorrow.  Hope to see you there.

The track is quite usable as is, but we would all prefer to see some fresh snow on it.  The weather is calling for snowsqualls all afternoon in Bancroft.

Hey all,

Thank you to everyone for coming out, it was a great day even though it was about a million below zero.

Here are the final results.

The next event is: February 3rd

Also thank you to our sponsors: www.fourstarmotorsports.com

And thank you to our brave workers who sat in the cold and watched us have all the fun :)

To answer the question above, the course was bumpy and slippy and we had a total 14 cars compete.

Hope to see you all at the next event.

Here's my pics:

http://s84.photobucket.com/albums/k22/StimpyBoy/Bancroft%202007%20Winter%20RallyX%20Jan%2020/

Ooer, I really did mess up run 3 and 4 badly. A big hit on run 3 made me afraid that I had de-beaded a tire (it didn't) but then I lost concentration and hit 3 cones.

Run 4, just ran out of talent and rode up one snowbank and spun at another  >:(

Thanks for a fun event!

There were 16 entrants. Everyone had a great time. It was very cold which was a good thing because it kept the ground solid as there was less snow-cover that one could have hoped for. Once the track was "broken in" it was relatively smooth, the only issue was the icy snow banks (which I don't think anyone hit). The Fish & Game club was a great location. It's too bad you can't see the track from the building though.

Thanks to the organizers and workers for an awesome event. Great chance to take my new car into the snow for the first time -- see you at the next one!

PS: Got caught in the white-outs on the 401 on the way home. Black ice and treachery. Likely would have been in the middle of one of the many pile-ups I encountered on the way home if I hadn't had the chance to practice on the slick stuff all day so, thanks MLRC, for saving me an expensive insurance claim.

Just returned from checking the RX course in Bancroft (Thursday 6 PM).

The course is pretty much as when we finished running on it two weeks ago except that it there is about 5 cm of fresh snow on top.

The weather forecast for Bancroft is calling for heavy snow in the next 24 hours - Bancroft radio station saying 15-25 cm.  Temperature is supposed to remain below freezing.

Bottom line is that track conditions should be amazing.

Some photos taken this afternoon to follow.

Track Conditions as of today:

Note, we have NO intention of plowing it unless they get a stupid amount over a foot and it's impossible for 2wd cars to even drive it. If we do get a lot we'll probably try to pack it down a bit though.

Title: Re: RSO FourStar Motorsports Rallycross - FEBRUARY
Post by RallyJake on 02/01/8 at 08:04:41

Looking good.
Can't wait to come out and play.  Just need to keep myself in check and safe it for the track now.

And we can always get the AWD's to clear it up for FWD guys anyways. ;D

As Ryan said, we are not planning to plow unless the course is impassable.  We have 4WD trucks and 4WD cars that can clear the course sufficiently.  However we do have a snowplow on call if needed.

It's interesting to see that over the first 3 runs the track got faster and faster and then on the fourth it got significantly slower! I think by that time the ice started to seriously polish and it got pretty nasty.

Anyway, had a great time, feel so good about getting the car settings sorted better, though still some fine tuning to do for the next event. I can't wait!

I had an amazing time today, despite being introduced to more snow banks and ice ruts than i ever wanted to meet.

Now i just need something to fill the time until July.

Thanks to everyone who helped out!
It wouldn't work with out you.

Well, it was my first time out, and even though we drove up in -14*C weather with no heat, fixed a loose alternator twice, fixed the cooling fan, and fixed a corroded alt-starter wire... it was pretty fun, just wish i was able to do more runs.

Nothing like a rally to show you how much of a beater your winter beater really is ::)

Andy stuffed it into a bank:

Fueling up on the way home. (and i got home without ANY problems ;D )

Thanks guys,
Jeff

Andy....with that many problems, you better put a DODGE badge on it...

I'm glad I could make it up to the final event of the season to help out.

And I know James is glad I left the OMNI at home hahaha

It was nice running the start/finish control for you guys, and I'm sorry
you all have to clean my five greasy fingerprints off your windshields,
but there wasn't enough time to wash my hands after the Pizza...

See you in the summer series WITH the Omni.

Just a note re awards for the Winter RX's -

I believe that James is planning to take the event awards to the RSO Awards Banquet tomorrow to give out to any winners who are present.

The RSO RX Series awards will be presented tomorrow for the Summer RX Series.

The RSO Series awards for the Winter RX's will be presented later, as they are 2008 awards.
