Title: MCO announces new stage rally for May 2009!
Post by Jeannie on 09/23/8 at 14:58:33

The Motorsport Club of Ottawa (MCO) is pleased to announce a new stage-rally event to be held next spring in the Township of Lanark Highlands. The road we have chosen is northwest of the town of Perth, and it winds through beautiful Canadian Shield forest. Please circle this date on your calendars: May 9, 2009 — and let yourself be tempted by the inaugural Lanark Highlands Forest Rally!

The early May date means that competitors will be able to rally earlier next season, with two new rallies on offer: the PMSC/KWRC rally at Shannonville in April, and the Lanark Highlands Forest Rally in May. Darryl Malone is organizing the rally.

Some of you may remember, or have heard of, the 1974 World Championship Rally of the Rideau Lakes. This five-day international rally was headquartered in Smiths Falls and ran stages as far north as Bancroft. The MCO is proud to be building on this tradition with our own Lanark Highlands Forest Rally, 35 years later, on one of the same roads!

This is definitely great news for our sport in Ontario.  Congratulations MCO, PMSC and KWRC.

Sorry, but did I miss something?

Rally in April at Shannonville?  Any more details?

Thanks,

Yes, a message was sent out to the licensed-drivers list about it. I'll see if I can find a link and add it here.

I can't get it to link, but look under MCO's Rally forum for this title: Tarmac rally coming to Ontario - Spring 2009.

The Peterborough Motorsports Club and the Kitchener Waterloo Rally Club are well on their way in the planning of a new OPRC event to be held at Shannonville Motorsport Park tentatively set for April 4 2009.  This will be a one day event run on 6 different configurations of the track with individual stages running in length from 7 km to 30 km and total stage length of about 120 km.

The early April date will ensure that all the track facilities are available for the event.  It is also in the middle of the huge hole in the performance schedule from winter to summer events.

An additional feature that we will be able to have two crews enter the same vehicle, and each will run the entire event.   This can be done by switching driver and co-driver as separate entries or two different crews in the same car or another variation if you can work it out.  A competitor can only enter as first driver once though, so there won't be one driver winning multiple classes.

We would be interested in your feedback

We have already received offers of help from experienced organizers in both Ontario and Quebec, as well as expressions of interest in competing from rallyists in other clubs.

As we are just in our early stages of organizing, I wanted to say how much we appreciate these folks coming forward.

2009 is going to be a very good year for performance rally!

I agree.  It should be a great season.

Can't wait.  Let me know if any additional help is required in the planning stages.

Paul

Thanks for the offer, Paul. Not that I know everyone  ;) but I don't recognize your name. Are you with MLRC? Coming out to Tall Pines?

ski_guy = Paul Pinchbeck

All I can tell you is that he beat me to the punch on a car that led to me buying a different car that I really love, so I'd say he's a pretty nice guy :)

Ah yes, the one that Glen Clarke ran in his debut stage rally -- Tall Pines 2007. That should make Paul easy to spot this year! Glad the car situation worked out well for both of you.

J.

Hi Jeannie

I should have introduced myself.  I am a member of MLRC albeit one from a distance out of Toronto so I have yet to make a meeting.

As Jamie pointed out I am currently driving the Pink and Blue Legacy Turbo.  I do plan to run the pines, although my nav and I have some things to sort out after our targa off (he was driving).

I just thought that it was time to render a bit of assistance to the cause if required.

I can be reached at 705 888 1891

Cheers,
Paul

Paul, that is very kind of you, and I have taken note of your phone number. I belong to MCO and PMSC, and live just west of Ottawa. You could say that living where we do inspired the first Lanark Highlands TSD!

Sorry to hear about your off at Targa, although I see you did finish -- congrats for that accomplishment! (Given that Targa runs for five days, I have to tell you that an off is not all that unusual.  ;))

I will be working Tall Pines as usual this year, so will look for your car to say hi. I'll be in a course car.

Thanks again!

Jeannie

Yes, and I think Matt may have been our first entry!  :) Looking forward to seeing some Maple Leaf members in their rally cars!

Workers are also going to be needed. Some MLRC folks are already key supporters (yes, the course cars are all filled) but we would welcome your talent as HAMs, stage marshals, etc.

Lanark Highlands Forest Rally on May 8-9. Rally HQ is at McDonalds Corners, with a huge lot in behind the agricultural hall, ready for all your rally cars and service vehicles. See you there!

Title: Get ready for the Lanark Highlands Forest Rally!
Post by darryl on 02/14/9 at 11:58:58

Get ready for the Lanark Highlands Forest Rally!

Things are progressing well with Lanark Highlands Forest Rally 2009. Our Web site is up and running, and you can find lots of valuable information about the event, local accommodation, etc. Visit us soon as www.lhfr.ca.

With only three months to go, things are getting very busy, very fast!

If you want to see some rally action up close, there's no better way than to volunteer as a worker. The worker page is set up and ready to take volunteer registrations.

For the competitor, we are now set up to take online registrations. We have a limit of 25 — plus an Early Bird discount — so you may want to register sooner, rather than later. A lot of competitors have been on the road in the past during the awesome Lanark Highlands drivex. You know you can't wait to be let loose on the road!

If you plan on staying the night, please see the accommodations page for an extensive list of local hotels and bed & breakfast. And for the outdoors type, they are many local campgrounds close by.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at organizer@lhfr.ca or anyone else on the LHFR committee (Craig Hamm, Robert Roaldi or Jean MacGillivray at rally@mco.org).

See you in May!

Description of the Lanark Highlands Forest Rally:

The competitive stages of the Lanark Highlands Forest Rally will be run entirely on a single road.  The road surface is primarily gravel and hard packed dirt (when dry).  In general the road is quite smooth in comparison to many stage roads and should not be considered a 'car breaker.' unless you attempt 'forestry.'  The road is quite narrow in most places and will demand precise driving at speed through a hardwood forest.  The condition of the road in early May is not entirely known, but it appears well drained in most areas, running near only one low marsh.   The stage takes place between about 200 to 300 m above sea level.  The trip northwards on the road (from the HQ end to the turnaround) will see an elevation rise of about 100m.

The rally-usable portion of the road is approximately 12 km in length, however, due to financial and safety considerations the stage portion of the rally will be restricted to just less than 50 km in length.  The Organising Committee felt that the best use of the road from the competitor’s enjoyment point of view was to include 5 stages of approximately 10 km each.  This will require a one-time transit of about 30 km to the north-end of the stage via paved public highways.  Thereafter, stage ends will take competitors either to a short turn-around, or a 10 km transit Service in McDonald’s Corners, at Rally Headquarters.  The total transit mileage is approximately 80 km, bringing the total rally distance to approximately130 km.

The Lanark Highlands Rally will provide competitors only with a ‘blind’ routebook for 2009.  Stage Notes will not be provided.  In lieu of Stage Notes, we are working on scheduling a two-pass recce, as this is now becoming a common practice in Canadian rallying.  The first pass of recce may occur on Friday night, along with registration and scrutineering, and the second pass on the morning of the rally.  Rally cars will be permitted on the recce.  Expect the recce to be closely monitored by rally officials so that safety and good relations with the local population can be established, permitting future rallies.  The schedule is drafted but far from final – the final details will appear in the Supplemental Regulations.  Please consider this as preliminary information - subject to change.
