Title: TALL PINES ROAD CONDITIONS - Photos Added!
Post by rosswood on 11/19/8 at 18:30:45

Just completed a tour of most of the Pines stages. If conditions on Saturday are anything like today, it will be a typical Pines - winter roads and summer ditches, no make that half winter half summer roads and summer ditches. Picking tires will be hugely strategic.

Took a bunch of photos - will post them later tonight on the MLRC forum - www.mlrc.ca

See you all in a couple of days.

Ross Wood, Clerk of the Course

Of course, the real trick is trying to figure out tires for each combination of stages on each loop between services. There are conditions there where something like an A034 would be ideal, and others where you'd want a soft gravel. I'm worried about how much of that snow in the forest stages is going to pack to ice during recce...

The snow we have had here (North Bay) has been "dry" and is more likely to be blown out of the way then packed down. Bancroft and North Bay get similar weather. The only "wet" snow we have had was the first one, last weekend. It was very cold the next night and the moisture was gone the next day.

With the cold temps predicted, I am thinking frozen gravel.

Good luck picking tires - none of them will be right!

How deep is water through here?

Will we make it through in my wife's Subaru Outback which we're using for recce???

Ferd, I'd say about 6", you'll be fine. We all went through it no problem on the work day.

HAHA...

I did the recce/notes school a couple years ago with my cousin. It was my first time driving 'real' stages. When we got to that spot, I thought we'd taken a wrong turn. I didn't think my Impreza could cross. I got out of the car and scratched my head like a dummy - I was sure we were not in the correct place (we couldn't be expected to cross that). A minute or two later a couple in a couple who were also doing recce drove by me in a minivan and crossed through like nothing was there. My cousin teases me about it ALL THE TIME...

p.s. I just took it slow(ish)... the car never complained  ;)
