Title: Subaru Legacy Spring Question
Post by Dave Cotie on 09/07/10 at 20:55:51

Anyone know the comparative spring rates of late 90's Outback springs vs. similar vintage Legacy GT?

I saw a set of LGT springs advertised and was wondering if they would be firmer than the Outback springs.

I am pretty sure that the extra heigt of the outback was achieved be lengthening the strut body, so the springs may be the same?

I'm pretty sure the Outback has stiffer springs... you might do well to contact Randy Zimmer... he might just know the answer.  I believe swapped an Outback suspension onto his Legacy tow vehicle.

I've been doing similar research, I was looking at buying an LGT and swaping in Outback suspension to raise it.  From what I understand you can raise a LGT about 1.5" with the Outback.  I'm assuming you can go the otherway around but you may have problems using the original Outback wheels (will probably rub on the bottom of the struts).  May also be an issue with driveshafts I don't know.  From what I understand the springs of the Outback are shorter than the LGT so you may have an issue there.  BTW 2000+ struts are a no go.

You can get more info on this on these two forums.

I can tell you that the Outback had the stiffest rear sway bar (20mm vs. 15-16 for other sedan/wagon models) in 1997.  Generally, that would usually come with different springs.

Sounds like what you want is JDM Legacy SPec B suspension:

Subaru parts catalogue shows a different part # for the Outback springs than other models:

Dunno how much that helps, if at all.

I THINK that anything 2000 onwards is multilink rear.  So, useless to you.
