Got 'em marked on my calendar James. Thanks

If I can come up with 4 gravel tires I just might bring the XR out for some fun unless it is sold by then.

The dates on the rallycross "home" page are still the dates from last year but say they are for 2011, but its not possible since they all end up being Mondays.  I realize that the proper dates are located in the top bar, and here and such, just thought I'd point that out.  Wouldn't want to confuse any potential new people.

Was in Bancroft today for a couple of meetings with Town officials and then visited the RallyCross course. It is a beautiful untouched 20 cm of fresh snow.  Unfortunately I was in my 2WD car, so could not drive it. Also unfortunately I forgot to take my camera.

I have run this course for the summer events but have never run a winter event so I'm not sure what conditions will be like.

I have access to the following tires but don't really want truck four sets with spares all the way to Bancroft.

Michelin C5 rally snows, Michelin X-Ice, Blizzaks, and Rally gravel tires.

What two sets would be the mose usefull, considering a seasonal, below freezing day in Bancroft on a snow covered course?

Title: Re: 2011 FourStar MLRC Rallycross Championship
Post by Dave Cotie on 01/09/11 at 22:10:15

Probably the middle 2 - Blizzaks and X-ice. The C5's might work, but they normally clear some of the snow.

Definitely not gravels. I have heard the harden up and you would be better with all-seasons.

Early weather report for Sunday is calling for a high of -10C and cloudy.  Also supposed to snow all during the week leading up to the race.  Can't wait!

Also, what tire pressures would you run in Blizzaks in a FWD card?

I'm guessing in the winter events you don't have to run high pressures like in the summer, as the ruts should be greatly reduced.

Title: Re: 2011 FourStar MLRC Rallycross Championship
Post by Yopofun on 01/17/11 at 08:23:55

I'd run a high PSI personally, as I've found that depending on the icy-ness, you'll slide into the side of snowbanks and can get dirt and little sticks in between the rim and tire. Its happened to me and a few of the other guys a couple times last year.

Title: Re: 2011 FourStar MLRC Rallycross Championship
Post by Donnie on 01/17/11 at 09:27:08

We run tubes, with the lowest pressure possible 22/25psi and haven't pulled one of in years. bring a pump so you can let the air out and clean out any debris around the bead, short stems are better.....Without tubes maybe five pounds less than manufacturers suggested pressure.Higher pressures= less traction, either way without tubes you run the risk of pulling tires off rims,so bring spares......

Just returned from preparing the RX course in Bancroft. Conditions are amazing. Photos to follow.

The course had not been touched since Tall Pines, so there was about 30 cm of snow. I was making it through fine until I got into a deep drift at the far end. I dug my way out, but only made about one length of the truck before I got high centred again, so I called my buddies at the Town of Bancroft and four trucks showed up within five minutes.

Once I got out, I drove the course about  a dozen times to clear it. We will drive it a bunch more  times on Sunday AM before competition starts.

The course is mostly quite smooth with a few icy spots. It will be like the day a year ago when the coditions kept changing  all day as the cars cleared off the snow.

Those are excellent straps - already have one and highly recommend them to anyone who needs one. Way better than a typical tow strap.

2" x 20ft recovery strap... max vehicle weight 9,000lbs... $24.99 (reg $36).   (pretty sure this is the strap I normally use... although it might be the 3" x 20ft strap... 13,500lbs)... they are great straps, but you need to pick up heavy duty clevis' and hooks to go along with it.

6" x 30ft recovery strap... max vehicle 27,000lbs!!!!!   $89.99.... not meant for little cars.  ;)

Compared to last year Ross, can we see the course looking more like a snowy road this year rather than a "track" with severe ruts? In other words will either the bucket or a plow be "flattening" the course out? Last year if we went out of the ruts at all we were stuck. If the course is flat we can use the road width properly.

Oh just get some AWD :P

Mind you, it would be nice not having to add an extra hour to the day while waiting to pull people out of the snowbanks  ::)

Post by rosswood on 01/21/11 at 19:35:20

It will be snow driving for the first while, but as the cars run on it, it will clear off and become icy.

The ruts didn't seem to be too bad most places. There is one spot where I am changing the course to avoid a couple of big frozen humps.

Don't get in the way of a car when its coming around the track and don't stand on the outside of a corner, and that's pretty much it.

You don't need a "Pass" or anything special like that but I'd suggest snowpants and big boots from the amount of snow that is out there.

Well it's truly an honor to referred to as a "bud" James, things are looking up for us, Hell !!!,we'll be practically neighbors soon :) Anyway since we may get 6 runs if that...... Leo may well be overwhelmed with people wanting a chance to run with "Pro" driver, and donate some cash to a good cause. If this is the case, some may be willing to run with a "seasoned" (old) driver, I'd be up for that, for maybe a little less than Leo's looking for. I don't require any damage deposits...... :)

Probably better due to the cold. It tends to keep things consistent and actually I find there is more grip than when it warms up and is greasy.

I was like James, I just returned from Mexico, late on Tuesday night and needed to take care of things on the home front after being away. My wife and I had our first real vacation without the kids in over 10 years, so it was nice.

Thank you!

Oh my god it was cold, and I thank all the workers for coming out and helping in what felt like -30, oh wait, it was.

Febuary Event

Please remember to sign up online, it really really helps me to get things sorted out before Sunday morning.

Also, don't forget that the times have changed from last year, Registration opens at 0900 and the Drivers meeting is at 1000, this way we can try and get 6 runs in.

Car Prep

Rallycross does not mean you have to bring a full rally car. You can bring whatever you want but there are some items we will be looking for or request that you have:
  • A Muffler!! Noise is a big issue for us, please help us not get kicked out of Bancroft.
  • The right tyres. This is a winter event, there is Ice and snow. Summer tyres do not work.

Towing people out of the snow backs is all part of the fun, however if you find that you are in them more than racing, as I said in the second drivers meeting, take your time, take some presure out of the tyres and you will have more fun all round.

Don't forget that you can like the Rallycross page on Facebook:

I love how a 1998 dodge grand caravan was the 4th overall fastest...

it was in the 4wheel drive class :S i didnt know those things could be 4 wheel drive. but the weight probobly played a factor in the outcome i think.

That's not the reason. Dodge drivers are just better than the rest.
Just ask James.

Checked out the course today in preparation for Sunday. There is still some snow left. It is very hard-packed with icy patches. Very small banks. We will be bringing in sand for Sunday to throw on the icy corners.

Pictures to follow.

February Update v1

REGISTER ONLINE..please

Please remember to sign up online, it really really helps me to get things sorted out before Sunday morning.

Also, don't forget that the times have changed from last year:
Registration opens at 0900
Drivers meeting is at 1000
Lunch around 1300

(this way we can try and get 6 runs in)

Car Prep

As a reminder about car prep, I will be cracking down on this in a big way for the final three events of the year, so this is the last event where I will be giving only warnings. Please read the rules posted on at: www.mlrc.ca/rallycross

We do get noise complaints, and keeping the residents of Bancroft happy is one of the biggest jobs by MLRC. If your car is loud, it will not run.

Towing people out of the snow backs is all part of the fun, however if you find that you are in them more than racing, as I said in the second drivers meeting, take your time, take some pressure out of the tyres and you will have more fun all round.

the people that own the course, do they allow people to come and use the course when there isnt events going on at all?  id really love a chance to go for a couple hours with a friend or 2 and just rip around the track for fun. we'd sign waivers of course.

I'm looking forward to this weekend! This will be my first rallycross and it looks like a hell of a good time.

Just one question. My full time racing vocation is karting, and I have a lap timer equipped with GPS which I was hoping to use on our rallycross car. It uses two beacons, one that needs to be placed on the start line and one on the finish line.

Is this something that I'll be allowed to set up?

Thanks, Tim. We will pass that on to  the workers. My thinking in spreading the sand was that it would reduce the chances of people damaging their cars by going off the course and hitting frozen berms etc., it would also reduce time lost extricating cars that went off and got stuck plus it made the action quicker, which is more fun and makes better photos. Bottom line is it got everyone more runs in shorter than usual time.

Workers:

I can never thank you enough for coming out and helping, you really make the day happen. THANK YOU! (and I am sure the $40 helps  ;) )

RALLYCROSS CONCERNS:

I have a few:

First off, at the drivers meeting I said that I wanted to get for sure 6 runs, and it would be up to you if you wanted 7.

7 Runs is only possible with support of YOU! You have to be lined up ready to go, cameras on, belts done up, windows up, helmets on and in gear when the car in front of you starts their run!  It is not hard to do this, there are numbers on your cars and we run in order. PLEASE PLEASE try and be on time for your run.

Secondly, I have heard that there was someone riding on the back of a car going from the service area to the track. And guess what? They fell off and hurt themselves. Lets not be idiots, this sport is dangerous enough so lets try and keep as safe as possible.

Rule Changes:

Some new rules / Sub Reqs will be in place for September and going forward:

  • Competitors have to run their run within 3 cars numbers of their start order or will be classed as a DNS and will not get that turn. Unless, if work is needed on the car and the driver/crew notifies HQ/Scorer (person running laptop) and then you will get up to 10 places to get started.
  • DNF notification now has to be given to HQ/Scorer (Person running laptop). If you are pulling out of the event please let the person running the laptop know so that we can keep track of who is still running.
  • Anyone seen riding on a car and not in it will have that car disqualified. No questions.
  • Timing Equipment: Finish timing equipment is classed as part of the stop box and will be included in the 1 minute penalty if hit.

I understand that these might sound harsh. Rules and safety items are in place to keep events smoothly and with no one getting hurt. If you want events like these to stay alive, we have to stay alive. Simple.

Timing Equipment:

We rented this from RSO after their very costly purchase. I believe it really helped out from a organizers perspective. But I would love to hear what you thought?

Thank you
James

Spent most of yesterday working on the course - put 35 tons of stone and limestone screenings into the corners. It's in the best shape now that it has ever been.

There is a bit of rain in the forecast - no problem - it will improve the track, not hurt it - no dust and the surface will be tougher.

OK, So 2011 is over. Awards are finished and I have a few things to point out or rather suggest:

To the comment "Oh just get some AWD"............

  • I NEVER got stuck - in fact on the first event of the year I think EVERY AWD car went off course  :P :P.

  • I was the second fastest car that day!

  • My little non-turbo 2wd car continued its success the rest of the year with 4 straight wins!

So, many have asked why did you sell your car?
It was partly due to finances and I stress partly. But there were many more factors involved.

First off the drive to Bancroft. 4 hrs from where I live. That's a long haul to just RallyCross. If it was on a Saturday that would be better just in case of a severe issue one could overnight and get home the next day. I have never been to another RallyCross location but seriously there has to be another place somewhere in Ontario???

Secondly, The course is brutal to say the least. If you want to go hard to win  then you MUST push your car to the max. The ruts, the stones etc are one that require rally suspension struts and tires. Yes people will argue that they run OE struts... sure pull them apart after 3 events and lets see how well those struts compress and rebound. guaranteed they are done.

My plans were to gradually build my car to Rally. I was in that process having HD Bilstein suspension, coilover springs, and was only running gravel tires.I also upgraded my brakes. My car was fast and in the hands of a Rally driver it would have seen times 3-6 seconds faster per stage.

But I was trying to build a serious FWD Naturally Aspirated car that I could Afford to build and run. If not Rally then RallyCross. RallyCross is not fun anymore. It's the same old thing over and over. Almost half the cars going out are destroyed. I personally have witnessed 2 rollovers and only with LUCK nobody was hurt!!! There have been more as well.

I can only strongly suggest to the MLRC president and RallyCross organizer that the course be moved elsewhere (and I mean at more than 1 location).

Many RallyCross events across North America are on fields. How simple. On a field there are so many more advantages than the course we run now.

1. The course would be flat making it easier on suspension, tires, rims, and little chance of rollover. One should be able to bring their new 2012 STi, EVO, Civic, or Sonic and be able to run for a day on all season tires and drive home and just worry about washing their car and nothing else!
2. The course can be different each time. Set it up with pilons of course. There would also be no obstacles like the trees rocks etc at the Bancroft Course. AND we can make it interesting..... Bancroft's course is well..... boring after 3 years of racing on it!
3. Having it a different locations west / central / east of GTA allows for more competitors to come.
4. There will be more drivers finishing and continuing racing by being able to bring a car to the next event.
5. Have a Class 5. This is meant for Rally Drivers for test'n'tune. Great way to let them test their cars and have more attendance as well.

Remember this is meant to be an entry sport to Rallying. A place where people can take a street car and go have fun. If MLRC makes these changes and works hard to try to obtain new locations this sport will grow tremendously! Being that I am not competing at this point please do not think I am sitting here complaining. I am just pointing out facts from a competitors point of view. And since I have time on my hands now YES I will step up and assist in this endeavor!

Jeff, I personally have seen a number of threads on a number of websites from people who have found the "perfect" place to rally cross. They think they have everything lined up and then when they tell the owner what they are going to do - NO WAY!

Right now MLRC is probably happy that they have somewhere.

I think a number of people have tried to find places closer to the GTA and have failed. It probably would draw more people, but for me it would actually be a longer drive. I am sure that if you find somewhere for a rally-X to run, people would embrace it.

I too have sold my rally-X car and I am not sure that I will rally-X its replacement as I plan to DD it.

I think the track may be a victim of the success of the program. It is mostly a sand base and by the time 40 cars get 6 runs in a day, even with DNF's it is probably seeing 200 runs. Plus the fact that to get those 6 runs, they probably only get 1 or 2 chances to re-grade the track, it ends up being pretty rough.

The last time I ran, I tore up my exhaust system, however with the mileage on the car, I do know that the first flange that broke was already pretty rusty. I ran 3 times and have run my Outback over the Black Bear roads and was still running on stock Outback (KYB) struts. They were still fine when i sold the car.

Dave,

I agree "they  (MLRC)" is happy they have a place. No "work" is required. They just have to go there, set-up, run the event and leave. Simple, they are inside as well warm and toasty. Bathrooms, place to eat etc... all great stuff.

Regards to suspension lasting.....  You were lucky and some suspension will last longer... risk of bending or breaking suspension there... It happens all day every event! On a field I doubt it will ever happen to anyone! Makes the sport less expensive.

Personally I would drive another 2 hrs away to a field where I could almost guarantee myself that I am driving home with ZERO issues.

The point is simple.... its too easy for the MLRC club to set up where it is now so they are leaving it there. They really do not care about the carnage to the cars and  the cost involved by the drivers to keep up the repairs.

IF MLRC wants drivers back and obtain new drivers and get 100 people there per event then they MUST look at another venue.

And just because you fail in finding a place does NOT mean you should stop looking.

Thanks for posting your comments... :)

Jeff,

We would love to find a RallyCross course closer to the GTA and would love to have a variety of courses and would love to have smooth courses. All of this we have been trying to accomplish for over 20 years.

It is extremely difficult. Since I set up the first RX course in Ontario in Bridgenorth in the early 1980's, I know of at least 10 courses that have come and gone - none have lasted more than three years other than the current course for a wide variety of reasons.

Most common problem is loss of permission because landowners get hassled by neighbours, by the municipality, decide they are getting nothing out of it etc etc.

Every club that has tried it has given up except MLRC - again for a variety of reasons - too much work, too much expense, too much hassle.

And you are totally wrong about it being simple for MLRC - for every day we run a RX up in Bancroft I average three days up there supervising work on the course. MLRC has spent over $10,000 on that course so far, believe it or not. If you think you can just run on a field, you are totally wrong. You have to constantly be working on it, because no matter what course you use, it gets torn up. We are extremely fortunate to have such strong support from the Town of Bancroft in providing the machinery to work on the course.

The ideal venue is a large gravel pit. We have had a couple and almost had a couple more, but invariably lose them, usually because they are pressured by neighbours and community to stop allowing the Rallycrosses.

I have had at least 20 people tell me they know of a great site, but not one has ever panned out. Provide us with a lead and I guarantee that we will follow up on it.

We are very fortunate to have what we have in Bancroft. Until something better shows up, perhaps serious competitors will have to pony up for suspension and tires. Pretty cheap investment really.

Meanwhile the Rallycrosses are serving their main purpose beautifully - to provide an inexpensive opportunity for grassroots experience that leads into performance rally. Take a look at how many of the RX drivers have moved up. That and the continued high entry numbers speaks for itself.

Ross makes very good points.  Setting up a Rally-x is not as simple as people make it out to be, and finding a location where people will not complain is next to impossible.  I would like to thank Ross and rest of the organizers for putting these events on.

Using “Golton SS stage” as a rally-x is a good idea, but as some mentioned becomes very rough after 2 rounds, and is really bad in certain spots by end of the day.  Having gravel rally tires is the best solution for this (used gravel tires can be picked up for cheap), and they will last you for many years of rally-x’s.  Skid plate is also highly recommended.  Actual rally suspension is not needed. I have been running stock suspension (struts) for all rally-x’s.

Using the Golton SS has a side benefit, as you can “kind of” compare your times against actual Rally cars from Tall Pines. (yes, I know there are few differences between the Rally-x and the actual SS stage)

Here are my 2 cents on current rally-x.

The summer rally-x events are great, can be very, very dusty on certain days, but generally they are great.
However the winter events (as someone mentioned) need to change!  The track is plowed very narrow, and after one round you were basically a rail-car, driving/following a set of tracks between snow banks.  NOT FUN !!  And, if you get out of the tracks, you are most likely stuck in a snow bank, followed by 30 minutes of NOT FUN for anyone till you get pulled out.
In the winter events the track should be plowed at least 2 widths of a car or wider, so you can go sideways (remember we are there to have fun and drive sideways), and not drive in ruts. At least I am anyway.
Then you have the 6 hour “there and back” commute, to drive five 1 minute rounds in snow ruts, IMHO it’s not really worth it.
I stopped going to the winter events for that reason.

One of the complaints I heard from few competitors was that they were unhappy with the same starting order in some of the events. They had a high starting number and were near the end of every run. By the time their turn came up, the course was destroyed no matter when it was fixed between runs. They didn’t go back for another event for this reason.  Yes, it’s an excuse, and you can’t please everyone, but they do have a point on that.
How about rotating the starting order, something like,  1st round start at car 1.   2nd round start at car 11.   3rd round start at car 21…etc. and this would solve that particular issue.  We used to do that years ago.

I personally preferred the old Gravel Pit in L’Amable. I am talking the actual gravel pit where we used to run the Rally-x’s in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and not the back parking lot area where the Tall Pines service is now.  In the pit, we had different track/route combinations, this also made it a bit more interesting. Plus having a 2 day event (Saturday and Sunday) was better.  You got way more runs in  ;D .

I also want the old winter Drive-X’s series back,  ya, Ross, this is me wishing    ::)

Thanks for the good comments.

Things we can fairly easily change at Golton:

(1) more variety of course layout and direction - will mean slightly more down time between runs. Will also mean spending a bit more money making course changes and a minor change in the Finish Timing eqpt needed (just a longer wire - maybe $75).

(2) wider plowing in winter - BTW the deal is that the Town of Bancroft provides the equipment and fuel and we pay the operator. So that would mean a bit more time required from the operator and thus a bit more expense. Also slightly more down time between runs.

(3) more change in the running order - a no brainer, no downsider as I see it.

(4) It might be possible to return to the old pit for some of the RX days. I will check that out. The reason we gave it up was because it was so soft and required a lot of course fixup between runs. It is on Town of Bancroft property, so getting permission and the other perks should not be an issue.

(5) James is already considering a full weekend special event.

I don't want anyone to get the idea that we are not looking for other venues. We continue to do that. We have one that is halfway ready for us and want us, but have not finished building the course - kind of got stalled in the project. I will talk to them again.

You cannot underestimate the very important positives about the Bancroft venue(s). The support we get from the Town of Bancroft and the Golton property owners is HUGE and would cost us a lot of dollars if we went elsewhere. We have negotiated with other commercial property owners, but their fees for use of the property were way too high and would have put RX fees beyond grassroots level activity. We are trying to keep RX entry fees as low as possible. I assure you that this is NOT a major money-maker for MLRC and all individuals involved are giving their time purely on a volunteer basis.  You must also understand that almost all of the Bancroft benefits are riding on the coattails of the Tall Pines Rally. Because it provides such huge economic benefit to the area, we get the support for the RX. Also you have to understand that about half the money we currently spend on the RX track comes from Tall Pines budget indirectly via RSO road damage repairs.  I assure you the Tall Pines is not going to move anywhere else closer to Toronto in the near future.

Please continue this conversation on the 2012 Can-Jam Rallycross Champion thread for RX locations going forward. Thank you.
