Title: joining mlrc and general what nots...
Post by captainbrown61 on 12/06/10 at 23:25:51

i'm new to this so forgive me for my lack of knowledge.
i recently came across the mlrc website and have had interest in racing/ rally for a while, needless to say, i'm interested in joining. before joining however i just want to get a general outline of a few things: the cost of joining and cost i can expect to pay for each event, car requirements (soon going to have an impreza if that matters) its pretty much going to be stock and will likely stay stock (unless it has to fit certain safety requirements), license (rally license?), required equipment (racing suit, helmet, etc.) and am i required to have a co-driver? any help will be much appreciated. thanks 8-)

Hi,

All the requested information has been provided in the main rally page: http://www.mlrc.ca/rallycross/

Single Membership: $50 (One person)

Event Prices:
   $45.00: Online pre register.
$60.00: Onsite register on day of event.

Car has to be of road worthiness...IE not break down down, and not be obnoxiously loud. If you're getting an Impreza you can drive on the road you would be fine. If its any car you can drive on the road, you would be fine.

No rally license is required for the rally-x events

A snell rated helmet(covered in the rules on the rally page)

No codriver is required, but you can bring one passenger in your car if you'd like.

Again, take a look at the rule page, but the above should cover your questions.

Captain Brown

I am not a MLRC member but member of another club

There are seven clubs which make up RallySport Ontario

You should check first which club meets your requirements and needs.

MLRC is a great club but if you live in Ottawa area MCO would probably be more suitable club to get involved with. {Kitchner, Peterborough are other general areas along with Toronto}

Costs??

That is the big question
Rally breaksdown mainly into three parts
TSD or Navigational rally
Requires vitually no equipment other than your car at entry level. You will need a navigator but Navvies equipment s calculator, pencils etc no big cost
Events run from $25 upward with longer overnight events probably the most expensive

RallyCross
MLRC is I think only RSO club hosting these events generally in Bancroft area. Equipment is an approved helmet which for cheapest is around a $100. Not sure of entry fees but around $50 I think MLRC has a price breakdown depending on membership. Supposedly little car prep but you will need extra tires and perhaps a skid pan depends how aggressive you drive.

Performance Rally
This is where the $$$$$$$$  start I would say to start your first event is going to set you back a minimum of $10 to $15 Thousand depending what kind and what state of preperation a rally ready car would cost you. I know some have done it for less but realistically its going to cost you $$$

However you can play at virtually no cost by working events and learning at what point and level you want to be involved

Membership Costs in RSO clubs runs from $30 up

I think you asked age? To drive 16 however you will need parental consent until 18

I thought CARS required a full drivers lic in good standing for the provence / state in which you reside, which would be a G in ontario, which would would work out to being 18+...

Jamie both CARS Rulebook and Licence application are vague on this
On check list for CARS licence it just says below

Quote:
copy of both sides of your valid
driver’s licence

To my understanding G1  G2 are both valid licences that come with conditions.

However I still refer to Learner licences at 30 day licence so what do I know???.

I do know Ice Racing and Solo accepts G1 & G2 as valid
CARS Rule B  I D.1 [Page B-4  in 2010 Rulebook] just states ...and be a minimum of 16 years of age. So they must accept G1 & G2

I hope in good standing doesn't mean no speeding tickets ::)

Speeding tickets mean you might actually be successful in the sport!

This is an article about the most successful rally driver of all time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A9bastien_Loeb - read this part:

Quote:
he was [] already noted for his daring/reckless driving style

Welcome aboard!

im looking into doing this as well, more specifically at the bancroft events, i live in burnt river, also have no experience in rallying, i have a car, however no insurance, due to my speeding ticket.... cant afford it atm, because no job XD nobody seems to want to hire part time highschool students.... i have a couple questions. 1, does anybody live in the area that i could get a ride with to and from events in bancroft so that i may learn until i can compete? 2, where would i find a snell approved helmet in the area for as cheap as 100 bucks? and 3, what should a skid plate be made from, what does it mouth or weld too and what should they be covering? also, where could i find some good enough snow tires without it costing me a bundle?

also, is there anybody willing to teach me some things about rallying? i literally know nothing, its like ground zero for me.
