Title: 2 metre radio Antenna
Post by Bruce VA3BRS on 09/14/11 at 19:29:45

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for a decent 2 metre antenna. Right now I have a short 1/4 wave antenna that I was having a few receive issues at the black bear rally in the summer.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you
Bruce

Bruce, what definitely works best for rally work is a 5/8 wave whip 2 metre dedicated antenna.

I have a 5/8 Larson Mag Mount that I trimmed for exactly mid-point of the band (146 MHz) and with my 75W ICOM I hit repeaters where many people have trouble (Like TC31).

The only thing with a mag mount is that when the trees are overhanging (like on the upper-cross road at Bear this year), you have to dodge the bad ones and you stop a lot to put it back on. I duct tape the coax to my roof rack so that I don't drive over it!  ;)
