Title: How much longer will the old peltors be ok?
Post by 2000 Impreza on 03/30/12 at 09:59:50

I have read a few things around the internet saying that the old bsi Peltors will no longer be usable in the near future but i have seen some conflicting information on how much longer they are good for.  Anyone here know for sure how much longer they are good in Canada and in the US?

CARS is allowing them for 10 years past the date of manufacture tagged on the helmet.

I was just about to grab one of those cheep bsi peltors off an online site but decided just to be safe I would see if I could find any rule changes for the BSI helmets in the cars rulebook.  If I read this right it does not look like there is much life left in that cert at all?

11.1.6 Only helmets meeting one of the following standards will be accepted for competition in any performance
rally and must be worn by all competitors when travelling in special stages:
(a) FIA Homologation -FIA 8860-2004
(b) Snell Foundation -SA 2005
-SAH 2010
-SA 2010
(c) British Standards Institution -BS 6658-85 type A/FR including all amendments
(Standard expires December 31st. 2013)
(d) SFI Foundation Inc. -SFI spec 31.1A and SFI spec 31.2A
-SFI spec 31.1/2005

From the bulletin sent to CARS license holders on Feb 7, 2012:

Rule Change #5 BSI Helmet Specifications (Effective Immediately)
Premise: The board approve an extension to the expiry date of British Standards
Institution BS6685-85.
11.1.6.c Reword to: “British Standards Institution BS 6658-85 type A/FR helmets
must be within 10 years of the date of manufacture and the original manufacturer’s
production date sticker must be permanently affixed to the helmet. Any helmets certified
to BS6658-85 type A/FR that do not have a production date sticker will expire on
December 31, 2013.

Just make absoultely certain it has a DOM sticker, and you'll be fine. My Peltor has a small silver sticker on the back. 2007-09 so I'm good for 5 more years, though I will almost certainly replace it before then.
