I've been toying with the idea of getting into rallying for a while now I've almost got the wife on board and finally convinced my dad to help me wrench (a ford Mk1 mexico broke his heart), with that being said I'd like to get it to a hatchback something that's easy to maintain without breaking the bank any help would be greatly appreciated.

If other please say what and why

Their is always the Lada for sale...it easy to maintain amd cheap.... Greater starter car... ;)

I did take a look at it unfortunately I don't have the space to run car like that yet (I did manage to convince the wife that we need to move somewhere with a decent sized garage and let me use some of the profits to fund a car ;D ) im thinking of getting something for rally x for now. I've also just considered getting my safety gear and try my hand at co-driving until I'm ready to get my own set up

Mazda. Mazdaspeed support is great and if you rally in the states there is money to be had (trying to get them to add CARS). Cheap parts, just like the Focus. If I build, I'll build a Mazda.

Being a little biased as we currently run two of them, I would say go Focus. The cars can be had super cheap and if you have room parts cars are in the $500 range. Also go fast parts are cheap, it's a very forgiving platform driving wise and it's heart and soul is a rally car. It also has a truly independent rear suspension as well which for it's price point is a nice feature.

It also boasts a turning radius like no other car I've driven.

And as a final bonus we've done a lot of R&D with what works and what doesn't so you've got some people to come to. Oh yea there's those other guys too lol; Peter Reilly, Jon Strack, Mark Williams to name a few.

There's a Focus for sale in the states with all the performance goodies on it as well as a few spare trannys, stock engine and a pile of other goodies. Very low attrition rate, if I had the funds I'd be all over it.

Also my dad's going to be my mechanic and he's a die hard ford guy, he used to own a Mk1 escort mexico when we lived in England.
