Title: 2013 Ontario Winter Rally
Post by rally_master on 01/30/13 at 13:39:48

Does anyone have any more info on this event? I know the rallysport ontario calendar states that its on the night of the 16-17th, but the event site only provides info for last year. Is this event still a go?

Still a go, don't worry.  Bruce should have more info soon.

Good to hear the rally is on  :)  It'll be my 3rd rally (1st night one) and my Navigators first, so I have a few questions:
1) Is there a novice set of nav instructions?
2) What kind of average speeds will it be on these back roads?
3) Auxillary lights - how necessary are these?  Does anyone drive without them? I'll be driving a Geo Tracker with the brightest bulbs the stock headlights can accept.

Last year we've won in Intermediate with stock wrx lights, but we could not keep the cas up on many sections, partially due to poor visibility, so it really wouldn't hurt to have them, but it's not a big deal if you don't.

Need. More. Snow.

(Need. More. Time. Yes, for those wondering, the rally is still happening.)

The Maple Leaf Winter Rally (MLWR) is just two weeks away, February 16-17. We've done some exploring and found some more interesting roads, which will extend the route beyond the areas that have been used the last number of years.

Registration opens at 8 pm at the Bancroft Fish and Game Club, and the first car is out at 10:01 pm, returning at about 6:15 am (unless they're stuck in a snowbank somewhere). The F&G crew will provide a great breakfast while the scores are tallied.
There will be more emphasis on driving than navigating this year. Navigators may want to read up on how to avoid motion sickness. Drivers may want to attend MCO's Sno-Cross or check out the MCO winter driving school. Total distance is ~365 km. with two gas and rest breaks at less than 150 kms. distance each.

Supplemental regulations are posted here.

It's a good idea to go over these in detail. Note: the link in the supps to the registration page is not currently working; I'm working to update the MLWR web page and the registration page, and I'll post again as soon as they're up and running.

Good winter tires and safety triangles are mandatory; these will be checked at registration (no, you don't have to bring the tires to the registration desk) and could also be checked on route. Not having either will result in exclusion from the event.

For more info, or to let me know that you'll be competing, email mlwr@mlrc.ca

We also need more Checkpoint crews; gas money and breakfast included. Email as above.

Stay on the road, stay on course, stay on time,

Bruce Leonard

Great news that it is more for driving, then navigation....

so just how different expert instructions will be from novice?

The expert/intermediate instructions won't be very different; I'm actually having a tough time making them more difficult. In that area, there's not a lot of choice when when you want to go from A to B, so it's hard to do instructions that, hmm, how shall I put this, give the teams the opportunities to make navigation errors. ;)

Bruce,

So registration and the like are gonna be done via email and not from the MLWR page on the MLRC site?

The website's not updated yet,  but the registration page is open
