Opinions on winter tire size for 01 2.5rs
11/30/3 at 20:32:09

So, the stock tire size is 205/55/16  what would be the ideal snow tire size for the car?  the guardex's I want only apparently come in either 195 width or 215.  I have a feeling 215 is a little wide.  Also, what about 15"?  can I do that??

Thanks for any help

John, on my Golf the recommended summer tire size is a 195/60R14. For a winter tire, I went to a 175/65R14. The difference in circumfrence is very small.

I would say that you would be looking at probably a Correction 185/60R16, to get the right size. It would be slightly smaller than your regular tires.

If you did this, by my calculation your only off by about a 1/2 of 1%.

Double check the math!!

BTW, John, the other thing to think about is how well the thinner tire may fit your rims. This may be a non-issue if you are getting steelies.

I think.... the best combination would be a set of Hakka 2's and the size hmmm 185/65/15 if its a 15
I just drove back from North Bay at night with SOO much snow there were cars in ditches all theway up and back, but amazing traction, no unerving moments the whole time, I was ALWAYS in control, they are amazing tires... well worth the money I spent , far superior than the blizzaks... It was like driving on tarmac Smiley

Thanks all for the input.  I have found 195/65/15 yokohama iceguard721's to put on some steelines.  I decided to buy yokohama because of their sponsorship of rallying in canada.

John, how are these tires working out?

My Mom was looking for a new car and she ended up buying a 04 Legacy Wagon (Premium Edition). I want her to get a set of snows after all the good things I have heard about the RE92's that come on the car.  Wink

Also can you tell me roughly what you paid for the Yokos?

Hey Dave,  The tires are phenomenal!  I cant say enough good things about them.  They are really a great tire.  The only problem is that they are REALLY REALLY soft.  Obviously thats good for ice and cold temps but bad for wear.  That being said, I may experience more tire wear than your mom given the exuberent driving I have been known on occasion to do!  Give those tires a good look, I doubt many tires on the market can give you such great grip especially for the price.  I paid $99 per tire whichh I think was a steal.

BTW, i noticed my old post said iceguard 721's  there is no such thing.  I got the IG 10's.  I had the Guardex F720's on my tercel and they were also a fantastic tire.

Thanks for the feedback John.

I need to convince my mother that she needs the snows. "My Jimmy never had them" - Mom.

$99, does sound like a great price. Time to start looking for a Yoko dealer up here.

BTW - 35 degrees below the last 2 nights!!! Not a very happy diesel VW in the mornings.

ASH - BTW, where do you live in North Bay? I also live in NB. I was born here and moved back last year.
