Best rally car of all time

Ok, lets get creative, and have some fun.  Grin

If you could combine the best rally cars from every era, and create the ultimate car, what would you choose as engine, body, driveline combo?

I'll start with mine. I'd have a Mark II Ford Escort in Rothmans colours, running Focus WRC running gear, powered by the Engine from the Sprongl's Audi S2.

Sight, speed and sound. Heaven.

Since childhood, one of my all-time favourites is the Lancia Stratos.  In the more recent past, the Sprongl brothers Audi Quattro S2.

Well,

In the real world the Escort Cosworth.

but not in the real world, an old Cooper S in BRG and drop in the Cosworth Driveline.

Now i know that it wouldn't fit but, and would look stupid if you just droped the mini shell on top of the cosworth driveline, just imagine it did..........

I also personally think that any rally car is great, making sure that it is painted the right colour, BRG  Wink

Of course, never having heard the Stratos and all those amazing classic cars, I can't imagine anything can beat the raw sound of the Group B Audis.  It's "religion"....

Why don’t you ever see Porsche 911 Carrara 4's or Turbo 4's pro-rally racing? I could only find records of one running in the states (Max Stratton of Williamstown, MA). Are the just too expensive compared to STi’s and Evo’s etc.? Or is there something fundamentally wrong with them on gravel?

That would be a cool rally car.

Well.. assuming you it dosn't have to actually have to work..  then here's mine.

Lancia Stratos, with Audi 5cyl (the one they built for doing hill climbs, but refused to run because Stig said the cars didn't like to turn with 600+hp pushing them), suspension off of an RS200..   that's about it.  Oh, and it'd have to have the subaru WRC piggies on the mirrors  Roll Eyes

nhibbert,

I think there are a few fundamental problems which prevent Porsches from being competitive in rally competition.

The first and most obvious is cost. To even get the car in the first place would cost more than preparing a fairly competitive rally car i.e. WRX or EVO

Second, things like weight (overall and bias), ground clearance, and lack of rally support (parts and knowldge) prevents most people from preparing one for rallying.

Don't get me wrong, a rally porsche would be pretty sweet, with the flat-6 sound and the sexy styling, though I'd hate to put it off the road and face the repair bill.....

Some people have had some sucess with rallying porches on tarmac and smooth gravel, such as the many Targa cars, and Jeff Zwart's Pike's Peak 911 turbos.

Hope this helps answer your questions!
