Skid plate mounting tips?
11/09/4 at 13:57:29

Hi all,

I intend to mount a 3/16" Al skid plate on my '91 Talon (AWD) I've made a template of the skid-plate and I'm at the point of determining where/how to fasten it.
Before I start drilling/cutting, I thought I should ask some experienced people.

- anybody have any tips regarding what frame parts are good/bad to drill & tap? There is a lateral member (at the front/radiator and two longitudinal members (one on each side of the exhaust/drivetrain) that I was planning to use.

- I was thinking to oversize the holes on the plate to ease mounting and use M6 bolts, good enough?

- the front of the plate will bend up and tuck into the lower lip of the front fascia. The remainder will be flat and bolted on with standoffs blocks (where necessary) in areas of elevation change to clear the exhaust. Not the ideal situation, but I'm not doing any performance rallies; maybe Targa and rally-cross.

- any cheap place to pick up urethane sheets for mud-flaps?  What about UHMW sheets for other underside protection?

Thanks for any info folks!

Regards,
Tashko.

I have a 92 Talon with a steel skid plate.

There are two rails that running longitudinal under the engine bay. They are bolted to the two lateral crossmembers.
For the front mounting I removed one bolt from each longitudinal rails, drill holes in the plate, used longer bolts.
For the rear I welded on little square pieces of metal to these two longitudinal rails. Drill and tap the square metal, two holes in the skid plate.
Done.
