Want to start Rallying
10/08/6 at 23:57:24

Hi there all, I want to get into racing and always loved rallying, though i thought rallying would cost more than road racing i stand corrected. So, because of my low budget, i shall start rallying. First decision is what car to use. I have a 1990 mazda rx7 that is completely stock and am also considering purchasing a 1986 ae86 corolla. which car would be better off as a rally car? Also I have my dad's 88 corolla which im sure he wouldnt mind giving up. Im assuming the rx7 would have a major power advantage since its only 1.3 litre at 160hp.

Other than the car selection, what modifications will need be done to the car to get in the most entry level class for CARS? I thank you all in advance for your help.

I had problems registering, too.

You can sign up there.
I was pretty anxious to build a car, but entered the rallycross (twice), and will be volunteering for a while to try and learn as much as I can, before I jump into anything. I'm glad I did. There is much to learn.

Firstly, it's best not to jump straight into rallying.  You should volunteer to work some events.  And start out competing in some navigational events, and rallycross events.  All these experiences will be invaluable when starting performance rally.
Second, there's a lot involved in building rally cars that you won't be aware of when starting out.   So it's better to buy a cheap used rally car to be your first.  That will soften your learning curve considerably.

Having said all that,
The AE86 would probably be the better choice to start with.  Both of those cars have been run as successful rally cars in the past.  But the Corolla will likely be more reliable and be cheaper to run/maintain.

However, I suggest you build whichever you are more familiar with working on.  There's A LOT to learn when starting rallying, and you'd be making things worse for yourself if you're trying to learn a whole new car at the same time.

This website has all the rules you need to know regarding car prep, and mandatory equipment.  You should memorise as much of that as possible.
Obvious things that you will need are: rollcage, harnesses, fire extinguisher, first aid kit.  Plus driver related gear: helmet, racing suit, club membership, first aid certificate, licence, etc.

Starting out in production class, you don't need much besides the minimum required safety equipment.
Rally-worthy suspension.  (Hot Bits works great).
Skid plate.  Aluminum or steel to protect the oil pan.  You should also have something under the brake and fuel lines, as well as the gas tank.  But those ones don't need to be as strong.
Gravel tires.  Not required when starting out.  But they do make a big difference.  If you're on a budget then used snow tires with tubes will do the job.

Hope this helps.
Most important thing is to show up to events and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Thanks for all the help guys. Wedge, i was looking into hot bits suspension, and if I am correct a kit for my car is $3000, thats a tad high, infact thats very high. any other cheaper ways to go? And just a few questions about production class, are you allowed to change the tires and suspension? I am on a pretty tight budget so anywher ewhere i can save a few dollars will help alot. I plan on running production class so any suggestions?

Question: how would i go about getting my competition lisence? what are the steps?

Thanks.

As Phil said, suspension is not the right place to try to save money.  Hot Bits should have other kits available.  Last time I checked, $3000 is their best kit.  That comes with remote canisters, and fully adjustable, etc.  You don't need such things.  All you really need is the strength/reliability.  They have cheaper kits around ~$2000.  Which would be all you need.
Either way, that's the cheapest you're going to find a proven reliable suspension for rallying.  As for legality in production class, the main thing you're not allowed to have is an adjustable top mount.  Other than that, the suspension is mostly free.

Some people have run stock suspension.  You just have to be aware while driving, that you must take it easy over the rough stuff.  And bring along a full set of spares.

Same goes for tires.  You can run any tires, and you can save money by not buying gravel tires.  But again, that limits how hard you can push in bad conditions.

It is possible to rally on a VERY limited budget, and be successful.  I am walking proof of that.  The trick is to draw a very big thick line between things that you NEED, and things that you want.  Then just stick to the bare essentials.

I know that the suspension is a very important part of the car, but for now i just want something cheap to just rally with, im not planning on winning any championships now. The stock suspension is not an option because i bought the car with it and it needs to be replaced, so instead of shelling out money for oem parts from a dealer i might as well put it into some sort of performance suspension, the lower the price the better. I know the saying you get what you pay for comes into play here but as i said i am on a low budget! im assuming hte safety gear (helmets, suits etc) are going to cost me more than the car and its rally modifications. So let me re-title this thread.

Want to Build A VERY LOW budget rx7 rally car.

the rollcage I plan on building my self, other than that i am looking for race seats, tires & rims, and suspension parts. the tires and rims need replacing too so cant go stock, might as well put into somewhat performance parts. any help is greatly apprciated.

Might want to consider buying a pre-built rally car.  It's a cheaper and faster way to get into the sport, and you can build up your own car in the meantime.  Check out these classified pages for some cars for sale:

http://www.mlrc.ca/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=buysell
http://www.specialstage.com/classifieds/
http://www.rsq.qc.ca/annonces/liste.php?categorie=1-1

Getting a license - you need a club membership, first aid certificate, a medical and some cash.

You can join MLRC here:  http://www.mlrc.ca/join.html

RallySport Ontario usually holds a first aid course in the spring.  However, you can also do any course that gives you basic emergency first aid training.  St John Ambulance and the Red Cross hold regular training sessions that would qualify for a CARS license.

License and medical forms are available here:

Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Safety is THE #1 most important part you need to consider well before suspention & engine mods.
NEVER skrimp of the safety bits  cage, harneses, personal gear such as suit & helmet, etc.

. . . particularly if you're building the cage yourself. You better know what you're doing, or have an experienced cage builder helping you.
