Let the stories begin!
While settting up tape etc. on Thursday, my grandson Cody and I first saw a beautiful deer crossing Hwy 35 just near Sherborne Lake Road, then into the actual stage route we saw another beautiful deer and finally a few klicks from the turnaround a huge black bear in the middle of the road, who looked back over it's shoulder at us and then bounded down the road in front of us and off into the woods - what a beautiful site.

Our rally went pretty well.

I started the first stage pushing a little too hard.  Which probably only cost us a few seconds.  On stages 2 & 3, I relaxed a bit, and was 23 and 12 seconds faster respectively.  At the turnaround after stage 3, I discovered that the battery tie-down had vibrated loose, and lodged itself in the rad fan.  No damage done, but I took it as a subtle warning to be easier over the rough stuff.  We developed a good lead in our class by that point, so I went a bit slower on the final run through Sherborne.

The final 4 stages are the fastest of the rally, and I knew from the beginning, that's where I was going to do my big push.  With the class lead seemingly secure, I was now pushing for the best possible overall result.  6th overall, or even 5th was not outside the realm of possibility.  Pine Springs went well, I was fast but still without really taking any risks.  The first run through Ril Lake is where I really decided to go for it.  But almost right away where the road opens up, I was going flat out and lost control of the car at the top of 3rd gear (~120km/h).  The road there is wide and smooth, but MUCH slipperier than I realized.  The car oversteered to the outside of the road, I countered, and it fishtailed all the way back to the other side of the road, then continued to fishtail all the way back to the outside of the road again.  But by that point, I had already decided to cut our losses and was on the brakes.  The car stopped, high centred, in the ditch.  No damage, but we lost 4 minutes before we pushed ourselves out.  We continued quickly through the stage, but on the very last turn before the finish we slid wide and sank into the soft shoulder.  Nearly rolled the car that time, but it was all good.  We perfected our 'pushing' technique at the previous off, so this time we only lost 2 minutes.

So after losing 6 minutes on stage 6, our class lead was reduced to only a few seconds.  On the final two stages, I kept it smooth and fast, and set a couple of blistering times on stages 7 & 8.  That's in spite of losing another 10 seconds at the start of stage 8, because one of our triangles was not secured in the car.

So we got the P2 win that we wanted, and 10th overall.  Were it not for the mistakes on stage 6, we would have been the highest placed 2wd car.
A thoroughly enjoyable event.  I had a great time, as did my codriver and crew.  There even seemed to be fewer flies this year, I don't know how the organisers pulled that off, but congrats to them regardless. Wink

Right now, someone somewhere is practicing, and when you face him, he will beat you.

You can thank the heat from the previous week for the lack of Black Fly's. However that meant that there were more mosquitoes and deer fly's!
