Rallying and Insurance
03/17/8 at 13:12:17
Hello Everyone,
I am sure this has been discussed many times before, but I need some advice.
INSURANCE AND RALLYING
I have just purchased a Rally car which I intend to enter in a few events this year.
When getting insurance for this ‘rally car’ what do I do?
-Do I tell them its caged and what I’ll be using it for?
-Do I not say anything and insure it as a normal street car?
-Is there special insurance?
Any advice or stories that you think could be of help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
I need the do’s and don’ts of rallying + insurance.
Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon,
It really depends on how how much risk you're willing to take. I know there are people out there who don't tell their insurance company and hope they never have to make a claim. There are others who go the legit way and tell their insurance company and end up in Facility group insurance. While Facility is much more expensive, you at least don't have to worry about your insurance company dropping you because you've lied to them (which they can do). If you tell them it's a rallycar then odds are about 95% that they will not cover it under a regular policy.

Hi Jon,
I'm in the same boat as you - 'cept I have made my decision about my insurance strategy.
Rough idea given your age, location, the car, I'd be mighty surprised if Facility Association insurance for you was less then $350 a month.
Technically, your insurance could be canned for using an insured car for RallyX, as it is a timed event. I believe a few years back, some folks were canned for running Solo II events. There [thankfully] has not been a precedent set as to if event insurance covers transits, btw.
My new [to me] rallycar is in production class, so other then hotbits (not lowered!) seats and a cage, its all pretty much stock... This played into my decision about regular vs. facility, though it may be flawed logic.
