Aluminum Open Car Haulers
05/01/8 at 06:00:17

I'm musing about aluminum, tandem axle open car trailers - having trouble finding sources (relatively) close to home (lots of trailer co's, lots of links to manufacturers in U.S., little detail on inventory).  Anybody know of dealers in S. Ont who are carrying stock of such trailers?

Alternatively, has anyone imported a car trailer from the U.S.?  As much hassle as importing a car?

Thx,
Robin

I believe the guys at Jensen Trailers in Oshawa do have access to aluminum trailers.

However....i've talked to serveral trailer guys about alloy trailers, and the concenus is that if you actually tow (like across canada/long hauls) then you really just want a good quality steel trailer.

Most feel that the alloy things are for guys with fancy show cars/trailer queens, and tow them from car show to car show.

You could look up Miska Trailers in the Hamiltonish area.
When I had been thinking about it, a rental company had suggested I look into them.

Well, having actually towed with umpteen steel trailers,  my feeling...Kiss  is that half the weight would make a real difference for me towing with my Tacoma.  I also get a bad feeling having to paint the steel trailer every year or two and still watch it rust - so I'm still thinking about an alloy thing.

As far as the Miska goes - Martin's was OK - the price was right, but boy did it rust quick.

Every owner of aluminum trailers I have talked to was pleased with going to aluminum.

Robin's comments re weight and that d-----d rust of steel trailers is so right.  I have to paint my steel trailer every spring - mind you it goes out a lot in the worst winter weather.  Just built a shelter for it today to keep it out of the weather and hope that will help.

A tip - avoid any trailer that uses boxed tubing for the frame - totally rust trap.  You want an open frame - heavy angle or I bar.
