Suspension Upgrade?
02/21/9 at 21:37:38

Hey,

I'm going to have to change/upgrade the struts on my '04 WRX this spring and was wondering if anyone could help suggest a suspension setup. I want to stay away from coil-overs as I've hear that they're no good for winter with the all our salt and such on the roads and for a good pair, they get quite expensive (3k+)

I'm looking for something that will be a daily driver, but also can handle something some tougher stuff like a fair amount of off-road traveling and a few rallycrosses if possible Grin.

I've heard that the KYB/AGX is decent and that people have put it through some dirt road action, but not sure if that's just a smooth dirt road out to the cottage, or actually some rough stuff.

I've also heard good things about the Koni insert, but people only mentioned those when dealing with street and circuit racing.

So I'm just wondering if any of you have upgraded your daily drivers, or maybe even found some good upgrades for your rallycross cars...besides hotbits that is  Cool

Bilstein is a less $$$ solution that is sometimes used for rally suspension (including my rally car) but doesn't necessarily involve coilovers.  They are rebuildable/revalvable etc...  & durable.  Last I priced them out they were 200-250$/corner for a Miata.

This is as much as I know unfortunately - perhaps someone can fill us in on the details.

I try to pick up used coilovers... I just bought Richard's Hotbits rally set from the For Sale section here and put it on the beater for rally.  Since I never plan on adjusting the ride height, I don't mind if they corrode.  But I still spray Fluid Film or Amsoil Metal Protector Heavy Duty (MP HD) on the threads and use anti-seize on the perches.  Watch specialstage and here and make an offer on an old set of DT1 rally suspension.

Off road / rallycross needs different spring lengths and valving than what AGX and Konis are designed for.  They need far more fast-compression dampening, which makes daily driving with them a little bit noisy, but not uncomfortable.

Have you thought of picking up a set of Forester suspension?  I'm considering that for my STi instead of the Whiteline Coilovers I use for it during the winter.   Roll Eyes
