Ian, if it's a manual gearbox in a subie, it's just gear oil. I use Redline stuff myself. Auto subies use ATF in the tranny and gear oil in the diff. Nothing special. That said, maybe there is something special for the cozzie...

The center dif DOES have magic fluid. The dif is sealed and cannot be serviced. ie. pooch the fluid and you've pooched the dif. That's why you've never seen the VC fluid for sale.

Ian, I'm no cozzie expert, but I doubt that the Subaru VC fluid is what you need.

Buehler is right, Ian is looking for the fluid that is in VC of the subaru centre diff. As the front diff of his cosworth needs to be overhauled and it uses a similar fluid.  He wants to fix the diff and see if he can find the fluid to do it with.

It is not the standard clutch type LSD where the clutches can be replaced and shimmed.

He is NOT looking for the standard gear lube change. And in the cosworth the front diff is independant of the transmission.  The Cosworth uses a transfer case and a small prop shaft.
( and in stock Cosworth transmission set up there are two different fluids used, in the rally set up only one fluid was used as there was some re-working of the internal case for better flow and lubrication)

Saying that, it is the fluid to rebuild the internals of the LSD diff of the
Cosworth front diff.

Guys, the manual gearbox on my Forester road car is getting very notchy to the point where I can feel each tooth as it goes into some gears.  I note above the references to mixing the oil for the gearbox.  Any suggestions for helping here?  I'm assuming some of the syncros are on their way out (and it gets worse the colder it gets!)  Car has done 147k with full service history.

I found this advert for an adative but I'm not sure they'll make any odds (http://www.bgprod.com/products/driveline.html).  Greatful for advice.  Cheers

The fluid is some sort of silicon - it shears when the plates inside the unit (splined alternately for every second plate) experience different speeds from one-another - thereby allowing adjacent plates (each splined to a different end of the unit) to lock-up - and turn together.  Miller found some in California somewhere - it was stoopid expensive (we didn't use it all - might still be in the cabinet that was in the Elmira shop).  Replacing it made the unit work again.

It's probably a Ford RS 'part', but I think all those sealed viscous units are actually made by GKN? - maybe someone there can help you out? Also - since they make them all (AFAIK), maybe there's a replacement out of another car?

You could also try Vandlingham (sp?) in Seattle - I remember talking to him about it a few yrs back.
