Going to the US with a 'shell' - questions...
04/29/9 at 13:51:42
Okay,
I've got a bare shell, it's registered in my name. I'm going to be taking to the US for some work. I'm going to leave it there for a couple weeks and then go get it and bring it home.
I'm also bringing a couple of brand new race seats and tires for fitment purposes. I'll be leaving them with the shell and then bringing them home.
Shell:
Owned by me
insured for fire and theft
bare except for parts needed to make it roll, stop and steer.
I'm going to be towing it using my grandparents truck. They will not be making the trip with me. The trailer I'm planning to use will most likely be a rental (like U-Haul...).
Do I need anything special to get the shell across the border?
Do I need to declare any work done on the car?
Will I need proof of (Canadian) purchase to bring the seats home?
Do I need a letter of consent to drive my grandparent vehicle across the border?
Is there any reason not to use a rental trailer?
Any tips, or suggestions would be very appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

best way to do things is to have registration and titles and insurance for truck and shell. call u-haul and make sure you can bring the trailer over without a problem because they can be really thorough and stop you at the border if they think something is up or they're having a bad day. make sure you have receipts for the seats or be ready to tell them they aren't brand new because if you don't have receipts they can be really anal and give you trouble by asking a million questions and holding you back.

Years ago there was a procedure for registering Cameras etc BEFORE crossing with Canadian Customs. Possibly that would work with shell and seats [they used to issue a numbered sticker]
Trailer, Truck etc ???

Be prepared to be required to post a bond assuring that you will return the car to Canada. A few years ago I was taking a car for a friend to a shop in the U.S. for work - very similar situation. They would not allow me to cross over into the U.S. before I posted a bond personally guaranteeing to bring it back into Canada within 90 days. Wasted about two hours in the process.
You are entirely at the mercy of the individual customs officer as to what you have to do.
Having all paperwork in order and with you usually helps.

One thing I would do is print off all your emails/agreements with the shop. Alot of the time, the officer is looking for reasonable assurances of that yes, you are telling the truth.
Other times, they're looking to break out every relevant sub section in the book

call cbp at the border you are crossing and ask what is needed
get officers name...document it
call canada customs ....same...document it
have receipts for everything
unfortuantly this stuff is a moving target and is mostly at the whim of the customs officer
on the way to the states you should check in to Canada customs and they will document what is going down to the US...that will ensure ou will only pay duty and gst on the work carried out in the States
be prepared for them to contact the shop and verify
or you can just get a Canadian shop to do the work......

For competition only race cars (formula Ford) you can get a green card (I think that's the name) that makes the crossing boarder easier. Not sure if you can get this for a road car that is going to be a rally car.
And as a few other suggested, call customs several days before and let them know what you are doing.
