The 401 inToronto on a Sat night
05/05/9 at 21:00:57
I'm curious what the traffic is like in Toronto at midnight on a Sat? I can't remember the last time I had to drive it at that time of day.

It's a bit of a lottery. Generally not too bad, but construction or accidents can screw things up in a big hurry, and both are not uncommon on the 401 at night.
I've been caught in traffic jams at 2am on a Sunday night (Monday morning?) while coming home from the airport.

Thanks Alan
It made my decide to take Hwy 7 home. It may be a bit slower but it might save some grief

Hwy 7 from where, to where? It'd have to be pretty bad to justify that nightmare... Sure, there are accidents and construction on the 401 at night, but in my experience it's pretty rare to get held up that much late at night.

You can get rid of some of the "lottery" aspect of driving on the 401 by checking the scheduled construction on the MTO's Traveller's Information web site:
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/trip/map.shtml?ll=43.696424,-79.45964...
If you have internet access right before you leave, you can also check there for unscheduled events like collisions or emergency road work.
BTW - one rule of thumb to keep in mind: when they do weekend nighttime construction on the 401, they typically start closing lanes or transfers at 10:00 p.m. Earlier than that, serious delays are rare.

That's something I'm wondering about, too.
Highway 7 near where I work (by the 404) is surprisingly busy during weekend evenings. Same with Highway 7 through Vaughan, especially in around the Colossus theatre and the 400.
