When you are talking to the friendly customs folk, tell them you are coming over to spectate, not to work, the event. I don't think U.S. customs is quite as nasty about this as Canadian, but you don't need to find out.

Also, I usually tell them it is a rally-race, not just a rally. Rally has political connotations, and might lead to you being "invited" inside for a longer discussion.......
