It will make a mechanic out of you!

Hey,

I was thinking, over the past couple years what I used to know and I now know about repairing cars has increased HUGELY! I by no means am a mechanic, but I`m not afraid of replacing suspension parts and such as I used to be. I`d just like to thank the rally-x events because of this haha. I say this in a good way though, and not meant to deter people from racing in the events. I go out and have a blast on the Sunday events, but as my car is my daily driver, I don`t push it as hard as it can go, but things still happen and I`ve come to fix them.

Anyway, on my way home from the rally-x, my check engine light came on. So after investing in a little OBD II code reader, I was able to get the error code, and it helped my find my issue:

Going a little deep into the dirt pulled off the tube to the charcoal canister, so after cleaning out the dirt and rocks from the tube, hooking it back up, and clearing the code I haven`t had any issues since.

Its a little late to show what my factory skid plate looked like, or the other fixes I`ve had to do, but my question to the rest of you guys is, what has the rally-x, or other events done to your car, and how have you fixed it?

First event ever, I de-beaded a tire and bent a stock WRX wheel. I had to take that one to a wheel place to get it straightened out again, it was actually jerking the wheel around when I tried to drive into town at the next event Tongue I ended up getting a used set of Compmotives and gravel tires and never had an issue again.

The only other thing I did was I charged too hard over a rut one event and bent and blew out a strut. I drove all the way back to Toronto with like -10 degrees of camber. I replaced all 4 corners with 04 STI struts in the end. So, yeah, don't charge too hard over the ruts.

Well, actually I tore a driveshaft boot too on packed dirt/rocks in the LR knuckle, but I noticed that years later and just replaced the halfshaft.

To go in an opposite direction from this thread....

I have recently been getting the same code in my car.  It has come on and off a few times intermittently.  I tried to get into the canister to see what was the matter, but the darn nut was seized on.  I am not sure what is in there or if I can fix it when I do get it off.  Does anyone know?

Back on topic, I hope to one day take my car to one of these rallycrosses.  I am slowly getting ready for it, as I bought a cheap set of rims and tires.  I was wondering if the winter rallyX might be a bit less demanding on the car?  I figure the speeds are slower at least!

Also, my thought is to build myself a skid plate made out of fiberglass!  WHY?  because its related to what I do for work, so it is just a bit of experimentation for me.  I do figure that it would be a one hit and done deal with it, but then I could just make another one cheap!  I hope its not too heavy.  Does anybody have the weight for the steel or aluminium skid plates?

Not RallyX or daily driver related but we are getting ready to pull transmission out from the Lada and swap with a supposedly good one!

Similar to you, this will be new to us but we have a Haynes manual and about 4 weeks before the next event!!! Closest thing we have done like this change one of the drive shafts and straighten the wheel alignment with a couple trucks and a block and tackle...

Is the code you're getting P0457, as that's what I was getting? When search for fixes for the code for mine, I came across another area where people were apparently getting this issue from. If you read http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147054 it might lead you to some different areas to look, as it might not be the charcoal canister.

I ripped a tophat apart after hitting a deep rut. I had been using used placeholder suspension in order to send back a blown strut for Warranty. Thanks to my laziness, I still had the suspension, pre warranty work, in the back of the car. Bolted it up and drove home.

Actually, my code was a P1443.  EVAP Control System Vent Control Function Problem.  It went away on its own in a few weeks.   The internet fixes tend to say to check the gas cap first, which I did but I don't think that was the problem, since it now seems to be happier.
