Advice on trailers for hauling rally car.
09/22/11 at 16:08:26

I need to haul a car around to the Ontario rally events and I need a trailer.
I don`t know much about car haulers.  Was just wondering if anyone had any advice on anything I should look for?  I am hoping to get one on the cheep so not looking for something enclosed.  Not sure how many axles I should be looking for or if i should be looking for something with brakes etc?  (Plan on towing it behind a 6cyl Chevy pickup for now.  I know it may not be the best vehicle to tow with but I'm trying to work with what i have.

You're gonna want a tandem axle, electric brakes on at least one axle. Lighter the better if you're towing with a V6 for sure. If you keep an eye on the CASC forums, they pop up on there on occasion, though tend to sell pretty fast.

What Size of trailer and and what capacity would you be looking for. The company I work for sells trailers and I can see what kind of pricing I can get for you.

Try to avoid a trailer with a box frame (rust issues) , but that may be difficult to find in an inexpensive trailer/

For sure tandem with brakes.

I have a Miska dual axle that has been great for many years and they are reasonably priced even new.

Mine is available but comes with a Rally car  Cool

I ended up buying a open car-hauler this year also.
Given our stronger dollar I bought a new one for the LESS then some were asking for used ones.

I've PM'd you who I had build my trailer.  VERY happy with his work.  In retrospect though I would have paid the extra money for the beaver tail.  It does make loading lower cars easier.  But I 'tilt' it with the trailer jack and it works pretty well.

If you can afford it, an enclosed trailer makes sense as it hides what you're hauling, and you can securely transport tools/parts along with the car.

My fav was the folks that were using the stock-trailer to haul their car. (spring testing day on GCFR roads).  Lightweight, strong, and presumably cheaper then an enclosed trailer.  Likely difficult to find one used in 'good' condition though.

Bruce, can you get parts or just complete trailers?

I have a buddy who has a serviceable trailer but it needs 4 3500# torsion axles bad. I know PA sells them, but looking for other sources.
